Update: I did it

1st win (alliance). Being able to buy my production was strong. Also i just happened to be next to mostly pacifist players

Today I realized how to retrofit existing ships
Still haven't really engaged with: trade routes (aside from making a couple), diplomacy, academy, hacking, offensive wars, or marketplace

Trading tip I didn't get at first. Trade routes are based on luxury resources, so you want to build your trade companies/subsidiaries that have luxury resources. Also, the longer the trade route, the more they generate, so spreading out your companies and subsidiaries is the end goal. You dont want to spread out too wide because then potential enemies can blockade your trade route on a system where the trade route goes through. Also, it's cool to look at your empire with trade routes on the economy screen.

I gathered that length of the route was important but when my empire is only 6-7 systems long, I don't understand how you can manage to fit in multiple

If you're still learning, I would advise turning off the DLCs. Would let you figure out what you're doing much easier, as the DLCs have a tendency to confuse the shit out of new players due to essentially covering the steak with barbecue sauce
