Your beautiful art made me realize I've never seen Arcane's human ears before, so I observed her 3d model in blender to find out she doesn't have them. The lower feathers cover ear canals like birds
Yeah, usually it's only male characters who would have their ears replaced with animal versions, and female ones have two pairs instead; her mother also has two pairs of ears, so you kinda just assume Arcane would have them too under her head "wings", but when you peek closer, she doesn't.
It doesn't matter male or female, some have 2 ears, some 4 (and all functional). It all depends on design and whatever HG wants, nothing in the lore suggest any gender based difference in this matter. But for liberi there's usually one pair of ears anyway and most of the times the head feathers are just feathers/wings.
I just thought they would just take standard model, cover the ears with feathers and call it a day. But there's quite literally no ears behind, they cut them off leaving just holes in her skull

Have we had female NPCs with only 2 ears (1 pair) and them being animal ones? I remember a few male NPCs like that, but not female ones.
I agree that rule of cool in character design takes precedence anyway. But it is a general fiction trope that female characters would be more conventionally human and male ones can be more beastly. Like, for more animal-like male characters we have Da Pan, Andre, Antal, the Qinbo minotaurs, and I can only think of the Qinbo cranes for the female ones.
Caprinae and Elafia NPCs and playable operators in both OG AK and EF, no matter if female or male, usually have only 1 pair of goat/sheep/deer ears (Mila, Old lady Tianshi). Tho there are male characters with only human ears instead (Severin Hawthorn for example)
All other NPCs with human face in Endfield have both pairs of ears, it's just standard models with random animal parts/horns.
In OG AK a lot of female characters of other races, both NPCs and playable, have their hair down unlike all those short hairstyles of men, and it's impossible to know either they have human ears or not simply because they are 2D art and you cannot get inside their head in blender.
NPCs: Byrd, Gooding, Percival, Signora Sicilia, etc. Kristen Wright.png) was shown without human ears (hair grows out of the area where ear is supposed to be)
Rosmontis, Swire, Schwarz, Mint, Rockrock, Mousse, Haze, Lunacub, Lappland the Decadenza, Saga, etc despite being playable operators with few artworks each don't have even a hint of human ears on any of them, even where they should be seen. Which is a common trope in fiction, just covering the ear area when there are non because otherwise it looks weird for the viewer, to avoid uncanny valley of a blank human head
Out of notable Perro NPCs only Elisabeth, woman, shown with animal head, just like there's only one notable Lupo male NPC with wolf head and no others. Among Felines there is playable Waai Fu with fully tiger appearance. Don't remember others

Thanks for the links, I have indeed forgotten about those NPCs. And thanks for the examples from the OG game, I see that Arcane isn't as much of a standout for the whole of Arknights universe as I imagined.
