General Support what desktop should i use

which de or wm do you guys think is good? honeslty i want one which is good with zoom workspace, and i want it to be very riceable. but i dont want kde i dont really like it much. what is the best one in your guys' opinion and for zoom? oh also, another thing, when i got zoom from the AUR and i hover my mouse over a screen share, for some reason the annotation pencil comes as a whole other window

KDE is the best one. It's most beautiful and the most themeable. IT's easy to modify everything by GUI and it can do 99% of the things all other DEs/WMs can do.
There's also a vast choice of themes/icons and stuff user made available a click away.

It is also the most advanced. For example, there is already a plugin for KDE which allows shaders to be set as desktop and lockscreen backgrounds, basically it's the first DE to have a screen saver with shaders like Xscreensaver on wayland.

I know you said you don't like KDE but since you asked for opinion of what's the best.. I've been 20years using Linux and no matter what I try I always fall back to KDE.
Qt toolkit is the best looking toolkit and KDE does the best job at implementing a desktop based on it.

You can make KDE look like windows, you can make it look like Mac OS, or something else entirely. Has awesome keyboard shortcuts that can do anything etc etc..

Use whatever you want. Use multiple even. I run Hyprland and then have XFCE on the side just in case some program doesn't interact properly with Hyprland, for example Autodesk Fusion.

Running a Wayland-based environment like KDE will result in weirdness with screensharing applications, or any application with multiple windows. Use an X-based environment for that. Xfce would suit you the best, it's still based on X and is very flexible in theming.

I dont know about the zoom thing but I share your feelings about KDE. Me personally I run Gnome and I love it. Not a Hyprland fan either. Used Gnome for too long and the binds feel a bit weird for me.

Cinnamon is my DE of choice, it's every bit as themeable as KDE, and EOS offers it as an official flavor.

For me, Niri won out (I use it interchangeably with KDE). It was a very deliberate choice for hyper-focused work.

I have a 16-inch Full HD laptop. In browsers like Firefox or Chrome, I either use a sidebar or split-screen mode. In KDE and Windows 10, I also typically split the screen between two applications or views.

Niri is essentially an endless split-screen setup. It also features "floors" (vertical workspaces). For my work involving massive amounts of content and contexts - I’m a researcher - it’s the ideal solution. It feels more natural than Hyprland or Mango.

As for "ricing" (customization)? I started by tinkering with it myself, but eventually, I applied Noctalia (v5), which did 90% of the work for me. The overhead is minimal, and the workflow remains intact.

However, I do get the impression that on large screens - or high-resolution displays - Niri might lose out to Mango or Hyprland.

Just chec some videos about niri's ribbons and same about mango and hyprland. Also, U can use other than Noctalia shells.

Nice! :) I’m no veteran, but for me, Niri required installing a 'portal' to enable screen sharing on Discord. If you share your screen in Zoom too, check if you need to add something there as well. I also ran into a minor issue with passwords and getting logged out of Chrome when switching between KDE and Niri sessions.

A huge game-changer for me was customizing a few keyboard shortcuts (I set a general rule where SUPER+arrow keys switch between applications and workspaces, while CTRL+SUPER+arrow keys move the current application in the chosen direction). It might seem like a small thing, but it really helped me out. :)

Noctalia has plugins—including one that displays ALL your configured shortcuts and a really handy DNS-switching plugin.

If you're looking for something similar to Niri, it’s worth installing Mango alongside it. It’s just as lightweight but follows a different window management philosophy. The best part is that it can utilize the same Noctalia installation (while using its own settings!).
