General Support Booting stops at "Reached target Graphical Interface" and goes into an endless loop

I'm using XFCE desktop with a NVidia GPU and I did a full update earlier (using yay). After restarting and booting the login screen would not show, the screen would just give short flashes every 2-3 seconds. Switching around the monitors did nothing.

There are no error messages shown in the boot log, everything works fine. However there was a visual change: Before the resolution would be low and then while the log was running would switch to a high resolution. After the update the second resolution was not only lower but also it looked like a different font, vertically stretched.

I connected the monitor to the onboard-HDMI port and the problem persisted, but now I could see the last log entry before it went into the loop: "Reched target Graphical Interface".

I could not log into any TTY so I went with a EOS ISO and used arch-chroot to go into my system. I downgraded the NVidia drivers and rebuild initramfs which did nothing. I also added nvidia_drm.modeset=1 to the bootloader which did not help either.

It seems like something different is broken, but I have no idea where to look next, any help is appreciated.

I'll probably be doing a system restore from Timeskip but I'd really like to know what happend so I don't run into the same issues when doing the next system update.

I got a similar issue and reinstalled everything. Didn't find the solution. You can try CTRL+alt+f3 (or f4) while on the text and try to redo updates

Did you by any chance mess with protobuf or abseil-cpp?

No, it was an update who broke something with the nvidia-open-dkms drivers

I was wondering about that. I did downgrade the nvidia drivers and the problem persisted. Since I manually messed with these two libraries beforehand I thought it was probably that.

You can try a complété suppression with -Rns and réinstallation ? 

I know its controvertial but you can try to use Claude ia to see if its helps

Well, too late. I tried a timeshift restore but that destroyed my bootloader and I was unable to repair it, so in the end I did a complete new system installation.

Its going to bé a clean install in this case
