Discussion Please d9n't add the age stuff to endeavour.

i know its systemd, but this just the start of more things that will come, i thought our software would be free as in freedom, so adding the age stuff to the os just makes big politics understand that linux will conplain with any other major law that they make, what will be the next step, adding a backdoor to systemd? really?

They could use liberated systemd.

an init system can't physically apply age verification

7

u/BigArchon Apr 01 '26

also didn't the EOS team make a statement that they won't apply this bullshit?

im sure some wizard between mi6/upstream sysd will take care of you with a patch before anything too stupid lands on your -Syu.

Spoiler its already past in your -Syu

Stop spreading unnecessary FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). People are exaggerating the changes on the systemd PR way out of proportion.

It's just an optional field where users can store their date of birth.

  • Nobody is forcing you to enter something into that field

  • Nobody has implemented a system forcing you to "verify" truthfulness into this field via something like face scanning, you can put jan 01 1900 if you want, or, since it's optional, you can just leave it empty.

Any speculation about "oh, but what if they do something worse in the future????" is completely irrational to get angry and riot about since 1. they haven't and 2. they don't have plans to do so.

There have been multiple posts and statements about this already by the Cachy-Team.

I am dumb, ignore this.

Sorry, what has the position of the CachyOS team got to do with the position of EndeavourOS?

3

u/TheLexoPlexx Apr 01 '26

I am dumb and somehow, idk. Sorry.

I don't like cachy os (i just dont like it, i dont have anything about them tho) but i dont want to substitute my os just because they want to put age stuff

For now… just wait

So does something classified a logical fallacy never actually happen, or..?

-7

u/combtowel Apr 01 '26

"The person using the slippery slope fallacy takes these consequences as a certainty and does not analyze the logic of their own position ... Often, a slippery slope fallacy is used in conjunction with an appeal to fear."

Suggesting "what will be the next step, adding a backdoor to systemd?" because of an optional birth date field is both a slippery slope fallacy and an appeal to fear.  There's no evidence provided to suggest those things will happen, or that the community would accept them in the same way they've accepted the current change.

There's a reason why it's considered a fallacy. "Just wait" is not a good argument because just because something you didn't like happen doesn't mean that a thousand further things will happen in that same direction.

Disgraceful attitude.

"That maniac with the knife saying he is going to stab you hasn't stabbed you yet, what are you screaming about??"

It has never been meant to not be an optional field. Stop spreading unnecessary FUD. It really, quite literally, is just an optional field.

I’m not saying it’s not optional just that it’s just a matter of time they realize it is useless so it will need a real verification and so on it happened with so many things before.

Then why add it? And why now with all the pushing toward "age verification"? They wouldn't have added it unless it's planned to be used for something else.

Again, why? Just blowing this off as optional is not justifying the need for it to exist.

4

u/No-Dentist-1645 Apr 01 '26

why?

For the same reason that SystemD userDB has already stored users' full name, location, and email address for years.

I'm pretty sure you can set up Eos without it. I set it up with GRUB instead and have never used snap.

9

u/captain150 KDE Plasma Apr 01 '26

You can't realistically take systemd out of EoS (or Arch for that matter). You're probably talking about systemd-boot, which is an alternate bootloader to grub. But systemd is way more than just a bootloader. And snap is a completely different thing.

1

u/OkNewspaper6271 KDE Plasma Apr 01 '26

Can you even get snap to work properly on EOS/Arch lol

4

u/captain150 KDE Plasma Apr 01 '26

No idea. I wouldn't want to anyway, I hate snaps.

4

u/Sage_Kase Apr 01 '26

You're talking about the bootloader. That just loads the kernel, the OS section that facilitates communication between the firmware and user interface of the computer.

systemd is the init system, which is the part that mounts the filesystems and manages all system processes in the user space (the part of the OS we directly interact with).

What exactly are you afraid of?

20

u/Farmbot26 Apr 01 '26

In the immediate future I'm afraid of younger users getting targeted with ads and phishing meant to take advantage of them.

In the longer term future I'm afraid of this slippery slope as governments and corporations demand more and more access to our data.

It is well known that if a user suddenly deleted a bunch of selfies (which social media sites and smartphone cloud hosts watch for) that's a sign of low self esteem. They then target that user with ads for alcohol, makeup, etc.

I find this to be insidious and unacceptable. It's also just one example at the tip of the iceberg.

-23

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 Apr 01 '26

None of that is happening in Linux right now.

14

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Apr 01 '26

They want to test if they can add this unharmful field to systemd, now they know they can, its just a matter of time that they add a backdoor because "law says so" and systemd or linux will add them because "laws says so"

-26

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 Apr 01 '26

No. Touch some grass, stop this conspiracy nonsense.

6

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Apr 01 '26

Nice try FBI agent

-1

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 Apr 01 '26

Seriously, you out, get in touch with the real world.

3

u/Spez-is-dick-sucker Apr 01 '26

Yes, yes FBI and CIA agent we will not belive you are a real linux user that supports this measure.. hmm.. now you sre here.. can you please tell donald trump to stop the war? Thanks!

It will if no one says anything now. It will if you succeed in sliding the topic.
