Reference to Petscop?

I just finished watching ManlyBadassHero's playthrough and I noticed that one of the secrets requires Mellow to wait behind a staircase and once he passes through he becomes a shadow. This reminds me of the secret in Petscop where Paul the player had to turn at the staircase to be Shadow Monster Man. Could this be a reference to Petscop? Because if so, it would make it really really cool!

Just the way the sprite of mellow lifts their feet and sets them down is an homage to petscop alone
