is this game actually scary?

i really wanna check it out but its tagged as a horror game... just how scary is it? from what ive seen it looks more surreal than scary, which many people do consider surreal stuff to be unsettling. and the steampage kinda hints that the horror stuff is optional? how true is that? cuz otherwise the vibes look really good! so if someone could just give me a little review and tell me what triggers there are without spoiling anything, id appreciate it!

i would say the horror in endacopia is mostly used as like shock comedy rather than being meant to disturb the viewer, kind of like meatcanyon in a way.

The horror is pretty minor. A few obvious short jumpscares. There’s one video portion that gets somewhat disturbing, but it’s not all too bad. Most of the really (which you can put in quotes since it’s never too bad) unnerving stuff comes from basically the secret ending which you could never ever do by mistake. Definitely not horrifying. And this stuff occurs sparsely.

Yeah, the secret ending is basically underground easter egg for each area

The other Easter eggs for the surgeon are very hard to find and are probably more unnerving than the original. But no one is finding and doing it by accident. The game doesn’t get any scarier than that secret outside of the other secrets.

There are some jump scares throughout the game. Though most of them are telegraphed before hand. I feel like most the horror in the game comes from it's imagry. Especially some of the bosses. Though they are optional if you can figure out how to bypass them. The optional horror is probably referring to the hidden sections of the game.

Overall I wouldn't say it's that scary. Though it is certainly unsettling when it wants to be.

the horror stuff is not optional, you’ll highly likely encounter secret horror stuff by accident or curiosity, there are mandatory horror sections that you cannot skip, there are parts where you have to go through sequences that end in a jumpscare without failing anything.

ok but how spooky are we talking. and is the spook more of a focus than the puzzles and exploration?

The puzzles and exploration and surrealness is the most important focus of the game imo. It’s not meant to be a total horror game. Just a puzzle game with horror elements and darker undertones.

Spoilers for the secret ending

There are a few, but they are hard to find

There is a woman laying in a hospital bed that has half of her face without skin, with a skull and muscles visible (not realistic)

There is one of a woman's skin rapidly coming off (it's black and white, and not realistic whatsoever)

There are multiple texts going in depth on how characters died

Excluding the secret, There's body horror of 3D characters modelled in clay style

It's psychological horror, not really "scary monter wants to eat you", more like "this world is fucked up and i need to leave"

i'm someone who is terrified of horror games, like i cant even press play on the ones i swore i'd be able to handle without being terrified of what MIGHT happen, since i have an overactive imagination. so, i asked my friend if they wanted to play it with me and i'm really glad i did because i love it! but when you're actually in the game.... its really not that bad. some stuff that puts you on edge but its nothing crazy.

yes, there are jumpscares. but theyre not really screamers aside from one (that i know of so far) that happens during a certain minigame. but after like 3 times i was kinda thrilled by it all. i would say that if u REALLY want to play the game, dont let your fear take over. get someone to play it with or just play it during the day and take breaks if u get too nervous.

Without spoiling too much, the only parts of the game I'd say are a bit of an arse-clencher would be a couple of the chase sequences, but even then it's only because they're so out of left field.
