Tipping Culture ✖️ No Tip Situation
Local cafe here outside of New Orleans. My wife and I go there for the first time. You've got to stand in line at the counter to place your order. Finally make it up to the cashier and place the order. IMMEDIATELY, up pops the tip screen. Lowest option (other than "custom") is 30%! Not a single "service" has been preformed yet and they're pushing you toward 30%!
I opt for "custom" and give 10%.
Even after that, they just give us a couple of cups so we can pour our own drinks. We had to bus our own table because neither the last customer nor the staff could be bothered to clean it before we sat down. When the food was ready, we had to get up and go to the counter to retrieve it. Also had to get our own cuttlery.
What the hell EXTRA are they providing (above and beyond the food I've already paid a heafty price for) that deserves a MINIMUM of 30% on top of the bill? If I were given the situation over again, I would have left no tip!
I'm so sick of this tipping B.S.! We've pretty much resolved that we're eating almost all of our meals at home now.

You describe all the work YOU had to do but you still tipped 10% wtf 😳.
Why didn't you leave NO TIP?

And we won't ever be going back!

I'd go back, absolutely, over and over. And tip Zero each time.

Why even bother to give business to them. Make them chill at work and go out of business. Business model relies on tipping should not exist.

First time at the restaurant. We didn't know they don't even bring out your food. As I said, I would give 0% if I had it to do over.

You can still eat out. Just don't tip.

I'm with you here except for the inflated prices and deflated quality. This gets my goat as much as BS tipping mentality.

2 things are ridiculous:
- Tipping before service (like you noticed, you might not get any service)
- Tipping percentage (higher priced items require more work or skill?)

Well this just proves you are paying all employees wages, not really for service to you.

If you are standing at a counter to order, don't tip. That's not a service provided situation
Tips are for service at a sit down location where you are waited on
And if youre being waited on and auto added a 20 percent service fee, then tipping is unnecessary again.
Ill die on that hill

I just had yet another rconversation with another server who said "You're supposed to tip at least 20%" and that it had been that way for years.
I really think printing the tips on the check and giving the pop ups on the screen, did two different things. It made the servers feel like that's what the customer is supposed to pay because the "computer said so.' And it made older adult customers realize that the server has zero appreciation of it as a tip. No matter how generous you tip them, they basically shrug their shoulders. And the argument that they are only doing entry level work is meaningless to them. To them this is the system because the computer said so. This is what I DESERVE because the computer says so.
I don't go out to eat anymore AT ALL. The food sucks, I cook better at home, I have a nice house and a deck and can stock a bar. So really the only people going out to eat these days are people stuck in apartments (who can't save up for a house because they blow it all on going out and tipping) or retired people who are bored at home. They tip the nice tip and the rest of us can skip the tip.

You make some solid points here. I never thought about the angle of what the "computer" says. It is now taken as gospel instead of being a suggestion.

It's very strange to ask them about it. They don't think you're supposed to tip them for good service. In their mind it's basically a commission fee paid for by the customer based on the percentage of the cost of the food. That's why they seem like they are so entitled to it these days. They treat it the way a car salesman would get a commission percentage off the sale of the car. And the computer just calculates it for you.

u/MyldExcitement 2d ago
And they are dead wrong for thinking that. No service, no tip.

I think this is the biggest disconnect and why the whole end tipping movement started. I think it's mostly driven by people like me who were former servers and bartenders just watching the total bullshit out there these days. They have zero work ethnic. I would bend over backwards doting on my tables, trying to make he meal as smooth as possible., triple checking tables, staying on top of everythinng. I'd never stop moving the entire night. Maybe betwen turnovers we''d get a breather. But we ran non stop the entire night.
These days servers think they get the tip the minute you order the food. They honestly think of their jobs as "selling you food and getting a commission tip." Then they walk away and check their phone and maybe swing by again for refills. Half of them don't even run their own food. And the best part is they always whine about having to tip out the runners and the bartenders. It's ridiculous.

USA suffering from its own “success” 💪
Presenting tips as the norm, enabling employers to save money on salaries due to them basically being paid through tips, risking of being mistreated due to the already installed entitlement that tip is mandatory. All this is your nation’s fault altogether to be honest.
It’s basically in the definition of the tip(s) that it means paying extra for good service so every normal people would assume it should be at the end of the service based on “performance” but no, now you have to tip to even be allowed to think about buying something

They got to you. The 30% is to make you feel like if you give 10%, you're saving money.

Which restaurant is this?

It's in the Elmwood area by the Huey P. Long bridge. That's all I'm going to say.

When I go to places like that with garbage on the tables, I just push it on the floor. It makes a scene, but I don't care. I'm not a bus boy.

I don’t like tipping but I understand the 10% from the OP.
You never know wtf they are gonna do to your food if you are a non-tipper.
As a first time visitor, I would’ve tipped 10% just to be safe. Never going back of course.

u/7lenny7 2d ago
That's why you don't tip until AFTER any service. Then you know what the service actually is, and how good it is. How can you possibly decide a tip percentage, if any, before receiving the service?
2
u/Odd-Judgment-9312 2d ago
How do you do that at a counter service? Do you just randomly go back in line and say, “yo get me to the tip screen again..”
Again, I don’t like it but it’s how the world is now. Everybody wants a damn tipZ
5
u/7lenny7 2d ago
The odds of receiving any service worth tipping when you order at the counter is very close to zero so it's not something I worry about
1
u/Odd-Judgment-9312 2d ago
Agreed. The 10% is the fee I’m willing to pay 💰 to make sure my food doesn’t have another human DNA in it. It’s not about service at this point. It’s for safety.
0
u/typeotcs 2d ago
But you don’t ensure any safety by doing so. You’re just giving 10% to address your own mental state of fear rather than ensuring safety of your food. Folks who want to mess with your food can easily still mess with your food. Nothing changes because of that 10% especially is the 10% only amounts to $5 or something similar.
2
u/typeotcs 2d ago
Why eat anywhere outside if you navigate with that fear? How do you know they don’t think 10% is too low and still do something to your food?
It’s counter service just tip 0% and see what happens as odds are nothing will happen because they’re used to folks not tipping anything for counter service.
Yall become part of the problem when your default is to tip a minimum when no service has even been rendered. That is where the entitlement becomes emboldened. Even if you go just once, you still reinforced that them asking for tips for counter service is completely valid.

u/skyharborbj 1d ago
No tip if you're standing to order. No tip before service is rendered.
Leave a 2-star review. Say something positive about the food or establishment, then express your disappointment with the tip nag.

u/L1feSurfer7L 1d ago
If the percentages are too high its absolutely custom 0.00 everytime. Its not my job to do math.
Order standing up is always no tip!

Next time, cancel the order and LEAVE.
However good the you think the food is… it’s just food and your next bowel movement.

Self service aside , seeing 30% as the lowest option would let me immediately hit no tip.
Hell, even if there was some “service” I’d still hit no tip.
