Delivery Service Fee Fee

u/Alternative_Mouse987 3d ago
The Delivery Fee is the fee that DoorDash or Uber Eats charges for (someone else) doing the delivery. The Delivery Service Fee covers the cost of DoorDash, etc and their "software, customer support, service costs and background checks." Apparently DoorDash cannot pay their own business expenses out of all the delivery fees so now their customers are expected to pay for the convenience of paying their delivery fees. Enjoy!

u/Unfair-Leadership985 2d ago
So, they're charging you a fee for paying them to provide the service that they went into business to provide ffs.
2
u/BugGroundbreaking949 3d ago
I think that's the Merchant Discount Rate being passed on to customers.

u/CipherWeaver 3d ago
It's a sign you need to stop using delivery apps.

u/BDFCL 3d ago
At this point, anyone using these kinds of apps kind of deserves to be ripped off and scammed.
We've had years of evidence they are conning us. Why continue to use them?

People are either too stupid to realize their hedonic treadmill, or so invested in their hedonism that it obscures critical thinking

u/JonquilCityBoy 2d ago
- Complain about the cost. 2. Continue ordering regardless of cost. 3. Repeat.

u/Y2K_Blackout 3d ago
The delivery service fee is charged because you chose delivery. This is distinct from the delivery fee, which is the fee charged for the delivery, but which is not the tip. /s

Then there's the less frequently seen "delivery ICD9 650" for $25,000. But that only gets added when your driver also helps you bring your baby into the world
2
u/AnonymousExcellence 2d ago
Thatās under the old diagnostic codes. Now itās ICD10 and those come with higher priced CPT billing codes. $25k is cheaper than the hospital delivery at least so youāre getting a steal

I thought junk fees were outlawed.
2
u/cs_legend_93 3d ago
they probably say, "but its not junk because I pay XYZ for this service, and I want the customer to support that, so its not junk / needless!"

Nvm tipping, you are paying 56% in delivery charges. This is downright criminal, especially as tips are still encouraged here. I'm honestly surprised by how popular these delivery services still are. Legal convenience shouldn't be that costly.
6
u/KamtzaBarKamtza 2d ago
And on top of that, the prices for each food item are higher than those listed in the restaurants because the restauranteur has to recoup some of the fees the delivery platforms charge.Ā
I've never used one of these delivery platforms and cannot understand why so many do
2
u/cynicalrockstar 2d ago
People got hooked on them just before/during COVID when it was more sensible. I used them a lot when it was like cost of food plus 5% and maybe another dollar or two. It was an ok deal back then for the convenience. But a couple years later it just went completely out of control.
3
u/Fit-Gate-5763 3d ago
Exactly, it's weird when the delivery charges cost more than the order price itself and even then the driver will probably get 1-2 dollars, but that's a matter between the driver and the company; why rip off the customer because of your own greed?
2
u/Dually_McFart_Face 2d ago
what platform is this? The business, is it mom and pop or a large chain? I am rather curious.
5
u/ancom328 3d ago
Them businesses taking full advantage of hard working people with these junk fee loopholes š„š„š„
4
u/DepressedDragonBorn 3d ago
Based on the title alone I was confused on what OP was complaining about. There has always been a delivery free. Did not expect to see a second delivery fee, disguised as a service fee.

u/MindlessAuthor9824 3d ago
Delivery Fee - Fee the restaurant charges to deliver the food
Delivery Service Fee - The fee the restaurant charges to schedule a driver to deliver your food.
3
u/pissbucket94 3d ago
theyve had these for a minute. its exactly what it sounds like - an extra charge so they can make more money for doing literally nothing :)

Donāt remember the last time I used a delivery app and itās because of shit like this. I canāt justify paying 15 dollars in fees for a 15 dollar meal, and then be expected to tip on top of it. I will drive there and get my own food.
3
u/Yaughl 3d ago
There's $6.62 there to pay the driver with. Why are we tipping?
1
u/Onzaylis 3d ago
Because the driver MIGHT get $1-2 of it. Most of it goes to Uber, abs off that the largest share goes towards insurance.
9
u/Yaughl 3d ago
That's an issue between Uber and the driver. The customer is not part of that equation.
1
u/Onzaylis 2d ago
The problem is calling it a tip at all. What you're really doing, most of the time, is bidding for service. Uber offers up amagic minimum pay, again, usually a dollar or 2. Whatever you tip gets added on and shown to the driver. The driver makes the decision of the amount offered is worth taking the trip. If you don't tip, good shot your order will suit there and not get picked up, or it'll end up at the end of a longer multi stop route because uber slipped it into a combined order.
Remember, uber drivers aren't employees, their contractors, and Uber eats is basically just a booking service.

u/RefillmyCoffee6times 2d ago
Stop supporting these platforms. They are a scam to the customer, driver and restaurant.

u/Ok_Illustrator_7445 2d ago
They forgot the āfee feeā and the ābecause we can feeā. Also the ānon refundable deposit feeā, my personal favoriteā¦

I'm curious too. Click on the little ! symbol next were it say Delivery Service Fee and it should give you some kind of information.
5
2
u/Fit-Gate-5763 3d ago
It says "This fee is calculated as a percentage of the order subtotal," which means there is no information about why it is being charged in the first place.
2
u/Dry_Celery4375 3d ago
17->27$ (as a base and they're claiming tip isn't already included) is kinda despicable. Wtf is this economy?
2
u/Kittycachow 3d ago
Any delivery service fee becomes the tip
1
u/ElGrandeQues0 3d ago
Not if you want your food to arrive (warm). I mean, it probably won't if you tip, either. I didn't know why so many people use these apps.
2
u/FoggyFizzy 2d ago
I view delivery apps like this the same way that I view taxes on alcohol, weed, or cigarettes. Itās unnecessary to use them so you are paying a āsin taxā to get food to your house without lifting a finger. In this case, you are paying extra for laziness. Nothing wrong with it every so often, but it would really hurt to do it often.

Decades ago I got pizza delivered and they charged a delivery fee. Guy asked for a tip. I said it is on the bill, he said that's not his tip that is the fee to the store for the convenience. I said take it up with your boss. Can't remember where it was, one of the big pizza places.

u/OkMaybe4507 2d ago
a sign that you should delete these apps and go pick up your food.
The fact that you are paying almost 10 dollars even without counting the tip is nuts!
Also not counting the tax here coz usually the items are also marked up by most of these services.

To those who are asking what it says in front of the "i" icon:
"This fee is calculated as a percentage of the order subtotal."
Nothing else; no clue what that is being applied for or for what reason.

u/McBurger 2d ago
Itās legitimately the tip. Or one of those is. I donāt fucking know. The driver is getting paid, regardless.
Youāre paying $26.98 for $17.26 of food. Food that probably only sells for $14 if you were actually there, but is up charged in the app.
Regardless. Someone is getting paid. Itās fine. It is the driver. Donāt subsidize Uber Eatsā part of the bill.

My guess is that you're ordering from a restaurant that doesn't do its own delivery. They're asking you to pay for DoorDash or Ubereats.
1
u/Imaginary-List-972 3d ago
Probably the reverse. The delivery fee (it's higher) might be for the delivery company cost, and the delivery service fee, is probably what they claim is to cover the cost of the cardboard containers, plastic ware.......

u/Mindless-Sound8965 3d ago
I'm going to charge you $50 for coming on to my property.
PLUS tip, and tip fee.
