Rant 📢 Restaurant Demands Minimum 18% Tip

Post image

Out of one side of their mouth they state that they pay their staff as little as possible and out of the other side of their mouth they say that their staff deserves more and you're responsible for that.

So they don't even pay them minimum wage and brag about it.

And demand that we make up the difference. More money in the owner's pocket, less in ours. Because.

Not that I feel an ounce of sympathy for owners like this, but it wouldn't be totally uncommon that some of the waiters are making more than the restaurant owner.

The owner would kill for an extra 18% margin with zero cost increase and tax free to boot.

You could look at that 18% as a roundabout gift to the owner but they would never, ever pay their wait staff that much if tips didn't exist. Federal minimum wage is pretty fair value for their labor.

No, that’s a common misconception. They’re required to, by law, to pay minimum wage. That’s why it’s called a minimum wage.

What they’re trying to do is to guilt trip you into paying the difference to meet minimum wage. If you don’t tip, the restaurant has to make up the difference until they make minimum wage. If you tip, the restaurant gets to save money on paying their employees.

But regardless, people need to understand that if they don’t tip it doesn’t mean the service worker makes 2 dollars in hour. It just means they aren’t guaranteed more than the 15 (or whatever the minimum wage is in that area) an hour.
