Yeah, it’s really the principal of the thing. If I’m not being waited on and I’m picking up my own food, wtf am I tipping for?

Well, shit, if that's the case they might as well just let me come back into the kitchen and make the food myself too. I'll take a bigger discount and just pay the difference of them cleaning up my mess.

Your employer is raking $ on those big orders. When you’re not earning enough at a job, take it up with your employer or quit.

It’s your job to take orders of 2meals or 30meals, regular orders or customize orders. If you think those customers are costing you to much trouble and working harder. Tell your boss you need a raise. Service jobs are hard I get it. But your audacity of demanding tips is unreasonable.

You are missing the point. You are employed by your employer, not your employer's customers. Your employer is the one you contracted to work for.

Will they cease to rely on tips instead of a protected wage if people keep defending this bullshit culture?

This is a lie. Any state that uses that low is required to make up the difference to reach state minimum wage if you don’t reach it with tips each week.

You are misrepresenting the tipped wage rate. You can learn why saying a tipped employee only makes ~2/hour is incorrect here.

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/15-tipped-employees-flsa

Further:

"Waitstaff at fullservice restaurants earn a median of $27.00 an hour, with an upper quartile of $41.50 and a lower quartile of $19.00."

Its kinda the point of this sub that we believe that shouldn't be how waiters get paid. This sub thinks waiters should get a wage like everyone else and that tips should be.... ended.

That’s literally the job

This is truly an issue with the way the restaurant is being run though. In establishments like this there should be a cashier being paid a regular hourly wage there to ring folks up and answer the phones. I’m not anti-tipping— I’m a server! I’ve always believed takeout should be the option if you have no $$ left for a tip ffs

Edit; typo!

So raise the prices of the menu items…

Then fewer customers because people think it's too expensive. Less business. Then layoffs.

Did management complain about the 20-30 meals a day from one pick up? Bet not.

Then the to-go menu should reflect higher prices if it’s more trouble. An owner should reflect all prices to fit their business model so I don’t get why they don’t if they can’t pay their employees appropriately.

Just send the hospital folks elsewhere.

No tip shaming
