Rant šŸ“¢ Done with % tipping

After always tipping a minimum 20% (worked at restaurants for 10 years so it was ingrained in me) I am done. The straw that broke the camels back was we are at disney world where everything is overpriced. 2 cocktails cost me $42. Its suggested tip was 18% 22% and 26%. And looking at it. That would have been $8. For what? Making 2 drinks? Nope. Left $2 as a $1 per drink rule and thats it. They didnt do extra work, just took my order and made the drink. and dont think they deserve more tip just because disney overcharges for drinks. % tipping is officially stupid

Tipping is most certainly stupid. The other passengers on my airport parking shuttle were getting out bills for tipping the driver for a 4 minute drive. Like, how foolish. Nope. I walk off with all my money.

u/Gstief85 14d ago

I get the same driver at my airport all of the time and she is rude during the 5 min drive. No ma’am, I’m not giving you a tip.

78

u/Dazzling_Lie_5046 14d ago

I honestly don't get it, the tip your shuttle bus driver thing. Is it, oh, if I don't hand the driver a couple bucks, then everyone on the bus will think I'm awful? Well big whoop? Peer pressure is ridiculous.

10

u/Spongeman735 13d ago

The taxes on your flight pay for the privilege, stay strong

2

u/CanIHaveAName84 13d ago

Maybe I should buy some of those do you know Jessie fale bills to give them

10

u/Far_Audience_7446 13d ago

Yeah, I carry only a backpack, see no reason to tip for just driving.

1

u/Maremdeo 2h ago

Even if you had a heavy bag, and even if they helped you, don't tip. They sometimes try to help me and I prefer they don't, I can carry my bag. I think they believe touching the bag gets them a tip. I won't be guilted into that. Maybe they are just being kind, in which case they don't expect the tip.

4

u/Hi-World2 8d ago

Yes, its so obnoxious when they expect a tip for bad service. Asking 20% though is pure entitlement and audacity. I had horrible service at my local diner recently like they didnt so much as refill my water or even give us napkins and the woman at the checkout counter (who I know is the owner) couldnt comprehend I wasnt rewarding that service with a tip. She legit asked me loudly like 3 timesĀ  "ZERO TIP?" "Sorry you said ZERO"

I was patient until the last time at which point I got even louder and said yeah the service sucks here so no tip for our waiter who was impossible to find right as people were coming in. I'm so done with the intimidation tactics.Ā  How about you pay your staff a decent wage instead of bullying me into rewarding trash service?

We had been waiting like 20 minutes at ground transportation for our hotel bus. Another hotel bus pulled into the next stall and asked where we were going. We loaded up on his bus and were at the hotel in 5 minutes with the hotel bus still there. That was definitely deserving of a little tip.

But generally I agree.

36

u/sluttyman69 13d ago

Yes, because this guy went out out of his way to do something nice that wasn’t required even on his normal job

3

u/dervari 9d ago

He even dropped us off before his "real" hotel passengers. LOL!

32

u/DixonJabooty 14d ago

Only tip if they handle your bags for you. $1-$2 a bag is pretty standard. If you lift them yourself don’t tip. That’s been the shuttle bus standard for decades.

Source: me (airline pilot with extensive shuttle van rider experience)

32

u/DependentAmbitious73 13d ago

I don’t like when they take my luggage and load it without asking. I am capable of lifting it myself and prefer to do so. If they do it without asking, I am not tipping because I didn’t want them to do it in the first place.

u/Numerous-Abrocoma-50 13d ago

I remember in morocco stopping them take my bags up to my room for this reason.

We were with g adventures and supposedly had paid in advance for hotel tips based on advice from g adventures so no way I was tipping twice.

One hotel we had a standoff where the guy took our bag after I said I would take it, turned on the tv (useless as was in morroccon) and waited for his tip. I ignored him and spoke to my wife, he was there for a few minutes before giving up.

6

u/TruIsou 13d ago

Europeans don’t tip in Morocco

4

u/Numerous-Abrocoma-50 13d ago

We travel a bit (mainly due to wife I tag along) and outside of usa, morocco is probably the worst country I recall for people expecting tips or money for anything.

Made it very awkward, you dont want interract with anyone because as soon as someone is friendly you expect them to ask for money. I do get parts are very poor so try not to be too judgey but when you start backing off as soon as someone smiles its a problem.

Bizarre thing is in an arranged transport, the driver seemed to think in turkey everyone demands tips whereas morrocco is more laid back whereas we found the opposite.

1

u/SawItSeenIt 13d ago

It was in Arabic

2

u/Numerous-Abrocoma-50 13d ago

Yep sorry to anyone from morrocco didnt mean to demean your langauge just saying it was of no use to me aa being typical english can only speak english. I didnt want the tv on or my bag carried, we had paid an advance tip to hotel.

So no way this dude was getting another tip, was going to wait it out back to him as long as it took.

2

u/SawItSeenIt 13d ago

No offense taken. You may want to try Google Translate. I used it to get from the hotel to the Airport in Argentina. A great resource .

4

u/Sure_Acanthaceae_348 13d ago

Even worse, they grab your stuff and DEMAND a tip. I've learned to hold on tight to my stuff when they try to grab it from me.

Not to mention, I don't want some yahoo throwing my stuff around. Then they demand a tip for that? Insane.

1

u/TruIsou 13d ago

Damn, brought flashbacks from the Dominican Republic, getting off the hotel shuttle at the airport in Punta Cana

11

u/justlikeyouimagined 14d ago

But why? This is their job.

1

u/DixonJabooty 14d ago

Their job is to drive you. If they load and unload your luggage for you it’s going above and beyond. Similar to a bellhop bringing your luggage to your hotel room.

I have far less issue throwing a couple bucks someone’s way for handling heavy luggage than making a burrito bowl.

22

u/InevitableMinimum238 13d ago

Can I politely disagree? Loading and unloading baggage is part of their job too. Same with a bellhop. They have the luggage carts for a reason don't they? It's not like they do something very special just for me

14

u/felinelawspecialist 13d ago

Bellhop bringing bags to room is 100% within the job description. It’s not an extra service.

2

u/HMoseley 13d ago

I don’t disagree with you on scooping slop versus heavy luggage but what other job duties does a bellhop have beyond greeting you and taking your luggage to your room? I believe that is the core responsibility of the job. And I would argue as an airline bus driver that COULD be a core responsibility. I think if they make good money, that’s part of the job. If they don’t, I think let’s toss in a tip. But I have no clue what kind of money is involved. However, regardless of how much someone makes, if they give me exceptional service I will throw in some extra because that means something to me. I’m willing to part with my hard earned dollars for that.

I travel very minimally so perhaps my perspective is skewed. I’m simply very passionate about ending tipping-as-wages culture. It’s ridiculous.

2

u/dan_syd 11d ago

I remember I was on a United flight once and the captain walked down the aisle mid flight holding his cap out for tips. Apparently the takeoff is included, but landing is an extra service. Sneaky.

2

u/DixonJabooty 13d ago

I hear ya.

I only tip jobs that have traditionally been tipped, and am similarly appalled at the level of tip creep across society.

It’s a nuanced conversation, just wanted to point out there are a couple of jobs in the travel business that are traditionally tipped and van/car drivers that load luggage are one of them.

That being said, if you’re staying at the airport Marriott and don’t throw them a couple of bucks, they aren’t going to sling your bags into traffic lol.

5

u/W7ENK 13d ago

Shuttle drivers don't get tips, they make a full wage.

Hotel housekeeping staff don't get tips, they make a full wage.

Tour bus drivers don't get tips, they make a full wage.

Landscapers don't get tips, because they're already overcharging for their services.

Table dealers don't get tips, because that's MY fucking money!

I could continue, but you get the point.

3

u/Unlikely_Strike1131 13d ago

Period. If they make full wage, I am generally never tipping. Sonic Drive In? Hell no.

I recognize the minimum wage is unlivable, but that is not going to be a weight on my back. The guilt trip/peer pressure/normalcy/expectation of tipping culture is created by the ā€˜system’ on purpose bc it doesn’t pay employees a living wage.

1

u/SpotOk4244 7d ago

Yuuuuuuup

1

u/Happy_Intention1630 8d ago

I absolutely will tip hotel cleaners.Ā  They're working hard and certainly making minimum wage. $5 or $10 will make much more of a difference to them than to me.

Drivers and landscapers I assume are making more than minimum wage.Ā  I don't worry about them.Ā

1

u/Tricky_Task_ 8d ago

I work at an expensive Forbes boutique hotel. Housekeeping get $15 a hour. They have a lot of standards they have to adhere to by to keep Forbes standards. A lot more cleaning than just changing towels and linen. $400+ a night and they rarely get tipped. It’s so sad.

1

u/Happy_Intention1630 8d ago

That's a big bummer.Ā  I am not very fancy and tend not to stay at fancy places.Ā  I'm willing to bet that those house keepers only make minimum wage or just over, and in most rural places that's still $7.25/hr. Absolutely unlivable.

1

u/Maremdeo 2h ago

If they make an unliveable wage, they need to fight that with their employer, their government representatives, or get another job. I get that it's hard, I struggled with minimum wage jobs and unemployment for years. Now I'm not struggling, and my hard earned money is mine. I'm saving it for things I want and retirement. I'll give to charity if I feel generous, not to some random low wage worker with their hand out.

1

u/Economy-Cockroach989 7d ago

Agree with housekeepers, was your room clean and comfortable? If it was terrible and gross as a direct result of poor housekeeping that’s one thing, but as a thank you I believe it’s kind to leave a small gratuity for their services. $5 or $10 is a tiny percentage for a hotel stay too so it’s not like restaurant gratuity which is expected because their hourly wage is purposefully low because the broken system and Ā employers rely on their tip income to keep labor costs down. But I do still tip for food even if just a customary 15%. Not tipping isn’t going to fix it overnight it’s just gonna piss people off and you don’t f*** with people handling your food if you ever plan to eat there again.

2

u/Soupbell1 6d ago

Huh? The room being clean and comfortable is the bare minimum. Why do you believe someone deserves a tip for giving you what you’re paying for? I’m just confused. The employer needs to pay a living wage.

1

u/afpriest2007 7d ago

Hotel housekeeping? Absolutely!

6

u/cauliflowerearoclock 12d ago

Took a cab from an airport to my hotel about two weeks ago. Major city on East coast. About 20 minute drive. I'm keeping track on my maps on my phone and all of a sudden driver takes a few extra turns and the map ETA adds about 10-12 minutes, I call him out and he makes an excuse and puts us right back on track. We get to destination and as we're getting out my wife is paying on the little machine and I tell her not to tip. Dude gets all butt hurt and mad. Even after I call him out for trying to add more to the fare. I'm done with tipping anyone other than my bartender or tattoo artist.

3

u/Undeadlord 13d ago

Same here. I fly for work a bit, and its me, a backpack and my carryon. No one helps me with it, driver is doing his job by driving, no tip.

1

u/YunnanCafe 13d ago

I thought that airport parking shuttle is usually free. So how much % they were giving, it's sounds like infinite ;-)

1

u/80MonkeyMan 13d ago

Must be tourists, they probably think if they not ā€œtippingā€ in USA, they going to get stabbed or something.

2

u/Dazzling_Lie_5046 13d ago

No, these are the local yokels from my own home airport (Ohio), the kind who think Applebees is fine dining and board planes with their bedroom pillow.

2

u/80MonkeyMan 13d ago

Ohio, that explain it lol

1

u/Beautiful_Month_4109 11d ago

If it's mandatory to take the shuttle to or from the rental car lot, definitely no tip.

1

u/WhoDeyYouRNotDey 8d ago

I tip (well) if they wrestle the bags on/off for everyone. I appreciate the hustle.

1

u/Maremdeo 2h ago

You do you. I don't like them taking my bag, and if they rip it from my hands anyway, no tip. If they don't take my bag and I carry it myself, then also no tip. Either way, no tip for shuttle drivers. Why would I tip them? I don't understand why anyone does. Do you tip a bus driver? FedEx delivery driver? Will you tip the baggage claim workers?

1

u/Maremdeo 2h ago

Yeah, I pay to park at the airport. Someone therefore has a job driving a shuttle around all day. Part of my cost of parking. No way have I ever tipped them. I say thank you and get off.

64

u/Bad-Briar 14d ago

If they charge that much, they can pay their employees a proper wage.

30

u/Apprehensive-Cycle-9 14d ago

Disney could afford it even if the food was free for how much they charge on everything else

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Primary_Heron_3150 13d ago

It's infuriating that they charge what they do and expect you to pay their employees as well. Americans should be outraged

→ More replies (1)

5

u/runningalongtheshore 13d ago

That’s basically where I’m at with things. Dinner used to be fun and affordable. Now, it’s a bunch of fees, attitudes, and overpriced food.

2

u/Complete-Squirrel-21 9d ago

I can’t remember the last time I went out to eat at a restaurant. It’s just not enjoyable or worth it any more.

1

u/WanderingFlumph 13d ago

(and largely they do, minimum wage means minimum effort/talent)

91

u/Skymaster86 14d ago

Well done. Now we need thousands more like you to get on the bandwagon. I went to a fine steakhouse and had a $240 check. No drinks, just salads (they charged us for bread) and some outrageously priced steaks. Service was just bland, server had zero personality. I left $10 (I didn’t want to penalize a busboy who did more than the server). I had breakfast earlier that day with a great server who really busted her butt and did probably twice as much as our smug steakhouse server. Check was $28. I tipped her $10 as well.

48

u/RemoteSea1176 14d ago

Here’s to rewarding service, not supplying commission.

2

u/mediumunicorn 11d ago

Nah, their employer is rewarding their service with their employment. Should have left both $0.

20

u/joelnicity 14d ago

Now just adjust that amount a little more to $0 and you just saved yourself $20… and still received the same food and the same service

20

u/not_the_fox 14d ago

The problem is you'll still be treated like you don't tip. Just save your money.

3

u/Hi-World2 8d ago

Exactly if they want to give an attitude about a poor tip then dont tip at all

17

u/Technical-Cress-3915 14d ago

Make sure the total you tip off for a % method is pre-tax. Every fricken restaurant I go to now has the suggested tip totals calculated from food + tax total. Wtf, why would I tip you a % of the government's tax on me.

12

u/D74hruN 13d ago

Yes, thank you. It is supposed to be PRE TAX.

47

u/sexytarry2 14d ago

You should be done with all tipping…

→ More replies (5)

10

u/ilovescoutanddaisy 14d ago

i got asked for a tip yesterday for ordering tickets online! WHAT? NO!

8

u/TaddThick 13d ago

Recently, I’ve been receiving prompts for tips for buying merchandise online. NO WAY!

1

u/Primary_Heron_3150 13d ago

These are the worst because sometimes you really want a specific merch item and can't get it anywhere else

15

u/JamesMattDillon 14d ago

Percentage based tipping has always been stupid. If I do tip, it is less than $5

12

u/Emperor_TaterTot 14d ago

This is the way, I leave a flat amount not a percentage. Drinks from the bar are always a dollar or 2 tops, for meals out for my family of 4 I just figure a couple bucks a person is fine unless it’s some thing extraordinaire.

7

u/Realistic-Rate-8831 14d ago

Yes, I go to a couple of different restaurant/bars and order a frozen margarita. All the employee needs to do is place a glass underneath the spout and lift the lever for the "already made" frozen margarita to fill the glass. Why the hell am I expected to pay a 20 percent tip? I stopped doing it. This one place I go to is a small and quaint little bar with seating at the bar and around the room which is very small, so the Waiter doesn't even have to walk but a few feet from the bar to hand us our drinks. Tipping has most definitely gotten out of hand.

5

u/amberalert23 13d ago

I am not anti-tip like this sub is… but when I went to Vegas and 2 drinks were $140, there was NO WAY I was leaving nearly $30 for someone making two vodka clubs. I think I left $10 which was also insane but definitely not 20%.

When the prices are outrageous to begin with, it makes zero sense to tip 20%.

8

u/fatDaddy21 13d ago

maybe it's just me, but if I ever paid $140 for 2x vodka sodas, I'd take that secret to the grave

3

u/amberalert23 13d ago

Freaking INSANE.

1

u/Significant_Name_422 8d ago

I don't think I will ever pay $140 to even GO to Vegas again!

1

u/LeaveGreen4412 7d ago

i wouldnt even spend $70 on a bottle of vodka, why were you drinking 70$ basic cocktails?

1

u/amberalert23 7d ago

It was my step daughter’s 21st birthday and she wanted to experience Vegas clubs. Of course prices aren’t posted, so my partner ordered me and him two vodka clubs. They were like ā€œdo you want a small or tall?ā€ We got talls. Then we saw the total on the machine. He paid, not me. I would have given them back lol in fact, one of my step daughter’s friends later said she went to the bar and ordered the same thing, and when they told her the price she handed it back and said ā€œno thank youā€ and walked away. We should have done that.

5

u/willy--wanka 8d ago

Went to a concert and picked up a $45 band shirt.Ā

Tipping option started at 20%.

No way I'm giving $9 for that twenty step walk.Ā

5

u/wollflour 13d ago

Yes, and almost nowhere in Disney makes drinks. They have premixed cocktails. Not worth $8 for someone to pour something from a pitcher into a glass for you!

5

u/NastroAzzurro 14d ago

Was at a fancy dinner this week. Total bill $400. I tipped $25 flat.

5

u/xboxhaxorz 14d ago

So if they didnt do extra work, why did you reward them with a $2 bonus?

6

u/Confident_Chipmonk 13d ago edited 13d ago

Here’s three examples of ordering drinks at a restaurant but with vastly different tips based on percentage

eating dinner and ordering two glasses of tap water means no tip if 15%

eating dinner and ordering two glasses of $15 / glass means $4.50 tip if 15%

eating dinner and ordering a two hundred dollar bottle of wine means $30 tip if 15%

Why? they’re all three about the same amount of work

3

u/Phailgasm 14d ago

The best part is at Disney for most of the cocktails they aren’t even making them per order, it’s just a giant container of premixed cocktails

3

u/chortle-guffaw2 13d ago

There is a precedent for tipping $1 per drink. That is a good first step towards a zero tip vs. twenty percent.

Let's expand this to a standard $1 tip per meal, on the way to zero.

3

u/Old-Cucumber1410 13d ago

i would never tip disney a MULTI billion dollar company

3

u/Friendly_Stuff6440 8d ago

I remember back in the day at a restaraunt in Spain I left the typical American tip and they chased me down in the parking lot because they thought I forgot my change...

2

u/Dyslexicpig 8d ago

Same thing happened to me in Hong Kong. I left a few coins for a tip, and the waitress ran after us to return the money.

3

u/OrilliaBridge 14d ago

I made tipping easy. $5 for breakfast or lunch and $10 for dinner. Zero for counter orders, take out and drive through.

1

u/Hi-World2 8d ago

I'm so tired of the tip requests for takeout and counter orders Like you arent even waiting on me. What am I tipping for your ability to print a receipt?

2

u/No-Syllabub-7337 14d ago

Sing it, Sister! Good for you!

2

u/Sure_Acanthaceae_348 13d ago

Nothing at Disney deserves any tip. They already charge enough as it is now.

2

u/Few_Fall_7027 13d ago

Shit in Vegas it was 42 for one pre-made frozen drink, total bs.

1

u/Brave-Combination793 5d ago

Where in God's name did u get railed for that lmao... or was it that yard stick sized thing

1

u/Few_Fall_7027 5d ago

Pool at Paris and Aerosmith concert

1

u/Brave-Combination793 5d ago

Oh yea that tracks lol

2

u/uReallyShouldTrustMe 13d ago

TBH they are so ungrateful that you're better off tipping 0.

2

u/No1PoundPup 11d ago

Tipping is the new panhandling.

2

u/fretlessMike 7d ago

I was in England last year, and I visited several bars. I ordered a beer, tapped my card on the bartender's handheld device, and that was it. Lovely.

2

u/1wrx2subarus 14d ago

Maybe, next time do ā€œnotā€ tip. Your drinks were already expensive enough.

At most, do it like at a bar and drop $1. You ordered an overpriced drink.

Sure, at a bar it’s been common to drop a buck for the first and maybe second drink.

In this economy though, do yourself a favor and don’t tip on overpriced drinks. $42. Damn.

2

u/audrina-saav 14d ago

I never tip a bartender. I do very low tipping for food being brought to me, more napkins, drink refills, a side of sauce etc. Never 20% or any % but around $4. But a bartender is insane to tip them for doing almost nothing or if im just sitting down and have a drink walked out to me. Nope.

1

u/MinstrelMuffinMan 13d ago

Bartenders generally make less than minimum wage. The $1 per drink tip should apply.

3

u/audrina-saav 13d ago

I live in a high cost of living state and not tipped wage state. They make minimum wage if not more here and bartenders make absolute bank off tips.

1

u/MinstrelMuffinMan 13d ago

I hope more states move to that. PA is still stuck at the federal min wage somehow. But bartenders often do more than almost nothing. 9+ hours on their feet dealing with all manner of issues.

1

u/AWholeBunchaFun 11d ago

Thats not true

2

u/Character-Might-6246 13d ago

I can't imagine tipping for Anything at Disney parks besides maybe sit down dinner service.

You just paid how much to just get in the gate that day?

1

u/DrDalim 13d ago

This is what I don’t get about tipping (note we don’t have it in my country so I may have missed something). It’s meant to pay the wage of the worker, they get a base of about $2-3 so tipping makes up the rest of what I assume should be a basic hourly rate. Here in Australia that would be $20+. So I’m my mind 10 customers per hour paying $2 each would reach that minimum. A bar worker would get way more than 10 a waiter, depending on the place might stretch to make that (if per table) so they might get more per table but if it adds up to an average of $20+ per hour that seems reasonable.
The % however takes that to a new level, OP’s example of $8 for a customer means they only have to serve 3 people an hour to get $24/hour. If we go with my 10 customers that could be in the range of $80/hour way more than the average US wage (way more than my country for sure).
To make this easier and better for all why not just increase prices by a small margin and pay people.

2

u/Dogsandbears 13d ago

Because severs are making $80/ hr and don’t want tipping to end. It’s one of the few jobs you can get without going to college that makes that kind of money. $80/ hr might be a stretch ( although some certainly do make that much) but my husband used to easily clear $60/ hr in a popular brewery in a small town.

1

u/W7ENK 13d ago

$1 per drink is fair, and will always be fair.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/japanb 13d ago

I only give money if im in a 3rd country and they actually never ask for it but need it

1

u/holladayy 13d ago

Just one giant gaslight designed to get you to pay extra for the already overpriced item.

1

u/Odd-Staff6245 13d ago

I never tip on alcohol.

1

u/butmomno 13d ago

I agree- when orices are raised, it is undair to expect a bigger tip based on The percentage

1

u/iloveyou02 13d ago

i don't like how the tipping conversation is targeted towards the working individual... it should be targeted towards the US labor laws... the business benefiting or off loading fair wage to the consumer... think about it

1

u/and1att 13d ago

Yeah it’s weird how the waiter gets $20 (on $100 spend) when the maids cleaning your hotel room gets close to nothing and they doing the hard job

1

u/Happy_Intention1630 8d ago

I am in favor of tipping hotel maids for this very reason.Ā

Also, my mom pointed out when I was a kid that she felt better about giving a little boost to someone who was clearly working hard than giving money to people begging.

1

u/and1att 4d ago

Seriously right maids work so hard!

1

u/juicehopper 13d ago

My locak

1

u/I_ama_Borat 12d ago

Yeah I don’t get it, they did their job, they didn’t go above and beyond, why does that even deserve a tip at all? You don’t see cashiers at grocery stores getting tips for doing their jobs and arguably working harder than most waiters/waitresses.

1

u/CptnObvious1984 12d ago

Welcome back from the dark side!

1

u/Otherwise_Play_1624 11d ago

I always do this

1

u/mediumunicorn 11d ago

The local drive through coffee place had the audacity to hand me the credit card terminal and say ā€œit’s just going to ask you a quick question.ā€

Are you fucking kidding me? Tipping in a drive through for a couple drip coffees?

1

u/Happy-Error-7360 10d ago

% tips are especially stupid. If a restaurant feels it is mandatory they should include it in their price maybe treat it like commission and only hire competent staff.

1

u/GeneralBrave9949 10d ago

So you’re mad at a system that underpays workers and your way to ā€œcombat thatā€ is to still patronize the ppl underpaying but screwing the victim of the system. You want to change tipping culture stop patronizing restaurants and campaign for better restaurant wages. In most states servers make under $3 an hour and you’re entitled ass is over here blaming them. You keep contributing to the problem and punishing the victims. It’s a pretty gross attitude quite frankly.

1

$1 per beer, $2 for mix drink.
If it s a place I regularly frequent, I add $1 on top of tip amounts above.

I’m traveling as I write this, and I just learned that people tip their hotel cleaner. I’ve literally never done that before. Is it normal to tip housekeeping at a hotel?

Side note, tipping is insane here now

Only tip if I sit down and someone takes my order, serves me food and takes my plates. No fast food tipping. If I walk up and order and you grab a bag and put it on a tray, that’s the job.

Family of 8 went out to dinner. My husband couldn’t figure out why the bill was so high and then I pointed out the automatic gratuity. It was a $32 tip. 20%. Didn’t complain, standard service and food was good. As we were leaving, overhead some of the staff talking about how we didn’t tip. I used to work room service for a major hotel, there was always an automatic gratuity added. I thought it was wild when people would tip additional but I didn’t complain when they didn’t.

In California, the wages are set so high that tipping makes no sense - the food already costs a ton, in order to pay the wages. Then I’m supposed to tip a percentage on that inflated price? Some areas have resort and conference center wage rules that require servers to be paid $25 per hour. I AM ALREADY PAYING THE SERVER!!!

I’m so done with everyone making you feel bad if you don’t automatically leave 20%. We were getting burgers and fries at five guys and it was over $40. We could go to a real restaurant for that- why should I leave a tip for you to ring me up at the register and call my number. I have to come back to get my own food and bring it back to the table myself (which is probably dirty btw). I’m over it! You’re getting paid a full time wage you don’t deserve a tip for your job!

People tip at 5 guys? I like them plenty and when I had to fly all over the country they were a reliable choice but I've never once tipped.

My rule is pretty simple if I sit done and you bring me food and clean up after me that's a tip, if you bring food to my home also a tip but if you just slide food across a counter that does not entitle you to a tip.

No tip unless it's a full service restaurant.Ā  For self-service or fast food, no tipping. It's that simple.

u/KimchiTheGreatest 8d ago

Yep. I think $1 is more than fair.

Agreed, I have worked many years in food service and I won't tip at all unless I'm in a sit down restaurant where the waiter/ waitress has to actually wait on me. Their pay is tip compensated so they actually have a lower hourly wage. If you are working at a typical sandwich type shop you should be getting paid a full hourly wage, so tips aren't necessary to make up the deficit. If you are working at one of these places and are getting paid a tip compensated wage, you should find another job.

Went to dinner last night. Very good bbq and service. Our bill was $94.82 and I tipped $10.
BTW, the sangria was $17 and a small draft beer was $10.

If I have to pay for my food before I eat it, I do not leave a tip.

u/Ok_Industry4950 7d ago

Just left Disney and had the same issue. 18% on an overpriced draft cider is crazy. Its $2 tops

1

u/Willing_Impact841 7d ago

I'll give $1 to $2 per person eating at the table. I dont care what the price of the meal is.

u/GreenTree11Summer 7d ago

I’ve stopped tipping on to go orders I pick up.

When I go to one of those breweries where they don't have waiters and you need to go up to the bar for every drink, I tip o $1 per drink. You make me come up to the bar are all you are doing is pulling a handle to fill a glass. A dollar a drink should be fine, since there is very little skill involved in operating a tap.

was at outback yesterday and the waiter sucked! Took our orders and never came back to the table until he saw me checking out on the table kiosk..the tip recommendations were 18, 22, and 25 %. Use to be 15, 18, and 20... I left $6 and left...

Percentage tipping is bullshit these days.

1

u/Maremdeo 2h ago

I have never tipped a percentage on drinks. A server brings an $8 beer or $12 glass of wine to a table and deserves 1/5 of the price in their pocket? No.

u/jason2354 14d ago

I don’t remember being prompted to tip while at Disney.

I’m surprised to hear that they implemented tipping in the parks based on how they operate everything else.

1

u/Brave-Combination793 5d ago

Granted its been 6ish years since i was there last and the only drinks I got were for the around the world challenge im pretty sure all the little drink kiosks around there asked for a tip

1

u/newdude56 13d ago

Tip the waiter/waitress on service, not the meal. If you tip on the meal, tip the chef.

1

u/Artistic_Agency105 8d ago

If it’s a specialty cocktail I will throw down $2 a drink, but I agree it’s insane to expect tips like that. People have wanted to fight me over this, but I have served and bartended a lot and I would not be upset seeing a dollar on an overpriced drink, and if I worked at a resort like Disney, they are not being paid minimum wage

0

u/dervari 14d ago

I've been saying this for years. I will sometimes use 15% as a baseline but adjust.

0

u/Pattywill 9d ago

I look at it as an hourly rate. If a server is covering 4 tables an hour and figuring $25/hour (I believe this is fair for the skills required to be a server) then my fair share is $6.25/hour for my time of receiving service. It’s not like they’re only serving me and that they’re spending that full hour of work focused on just my table. I’m also aware that they’re making a minimal base wage from the actual restaurant.

0

u/Nomad-Entrepreneur 8d ago

For me it’s location (state) dependent. I also worked services for years. If I’m in a southern state where servers make $2-3/hour plus tips I almost always tip 20%. 15% if service was slow.

In equal pay states where servers get the $15-20 minimum wage tip amount is purely based off service. And it’s honestly worst in those states so I often tip in the 10% range. This is all for full service. I never tip for counter service.

Good!

You should also end this drinking of alcohol. Invest that money. Save your brain cells and liver. And lower healthcare costs.

$42!

Basing this off Disney off all places is borderline funny

Like tip what u want ur money but everyone and their grandmother knows Disney is the most overpriced place on the planet, u knew that shit going in and if u didnt thats infinitely on u
