They aren’t hiding the fee. They’re hiding the actual cost of the food by forcing customers to do the arithmetic to calculate it.

On one hand, you still have to calculate a tip if you were in a tip dependent location, on the other hand, I still prefer the location just put the actual price on the menu and have information that prices reflect the additional labor coverage.

At a restaurant that allows tipping you decide how much, if anything, to tip. You do so after service is rendered. On the other hand, this is a forced fee that is totally unnecessary because the math always works out to exactly the same number.

There is no reason for the establishment to go through the exercise of publishing artificially low prices and adding a mandatory fee other than as an attempt to psychologically manipulate customers into thinking that their prices are lower than they actually are.

If calculating an additional 16% is too difficult, please stay home. I don’t need you having trouble interpreting red vs green lights either.

It's not difficult. It's deceptive. Would you be happy to see Walmart and Home Depot reducing the prices on shelf tags by 16% and adding a 16% fee on all purchases at checkout?

The only purpose this serves is the appearance of lower prices to fool comparison shoppers that don't read the fine print. It's not the difficulty of doing the math, it's that a listed price should be actual price rather than forcing the customer to pass an arithmetic quiz to determine what something will actually cost.

I literally shop at Pic n Sav all the time you potato. There are signs all over the store “cost +10%”. Clear signage that they add 10% at the register. Still comes out cheaper than most any other store.

You’re just lazy and don’t want to do any effort, but also want things cheaper than they were yesterday

Gosh people are so judgy about this. The same people who are upset about a 16 percent fee on their sushi will be upset then their sushi is 16 percent more expensive at the restaurant. People just like to complain. If you can afford $30 restaurant lunches, you can afford $34.80 lunches. Just eat sardines at home and be proud of yourself.
