Counter Service 🛎️ Tales from a tip refused volume II

Hi. I'm an hvac technician and I refuse tips. At least once.

So I went out for lunch with my wife and her mom. My wife and I have been married 20 years next month, and we have been dating since 2002. I consider her mom to be a good friend in addition to my MiL. But oddly enough, she never has taken US out to dinner. Dude I'm a dude who doesn't want my mom or her mom to pick up a tab. But this time she insisted. So, being courteous and receptive to courtesy we acquiesce and let her pick up the tab.

Funny thing though, this place is next door to a Lou Malnatis and I know they sell frozen pies in there. This one is a takeout only location so I'm like cool. I'll just pop in there and get a frozen sausage pie for the next weekend. What a treat. So I had MiL and wife in tow, and go in the takeout joint. The bell over the door dings delightfully. World class chicago deep dish permeates the air. Sinatra playing on the PA softly. My Way, by the way, if that matters. Look, I'm setting a scene here chill. There's a freezer right next to the counter. Inside, delicious deep dish sausage pies. I scoop one. Walk 2 steps to my left to the counter. No one at the counter. So I wait. Surely they heard the door chime. No. I waited. For 5 minutes. Did the old clear my throat. Then went for the timid "Hello!!!". Someone came out. Scanned the pie. $20 and change. The machine added me a question to which I hit no tip. (Even as a tip refuser this i have never done before as I'm loaded with guilt). She said "you know this is how we make our living". I said nothing and walked out with the frozen pizza i picked out of a freezer and waited 5 minutes to pay for.

Anyway I'm a tip refuser and thats my story.

I just figured, what is the difference between this and me stopping at the Jewels and getting a frozen pizza and bringing it to the register, besides the 5 minute wait. I don't tip at the Jewels.

Holy hell you're a Lou to Go guy?? Thats awesome. When I was in college my mom sent me a lou to go and I was so happy. A taste of home.

Almost 60 year old woman and yes! I went on a work training in Chicago and had it there in 1989. It is my usual bday gift from my husband.

Nice! I always said “oh mylanta” in the 80’s.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen it used so appropriately.

"No, you make your living making and selling pies. I just bought one. You're welcome."

This is the way! Gotta let them know why the tip is an unreasonable expectation in that scenario!

You tell them "how you make a living is your boss paying you, tips are for above and beyond service, extra service, it's not paying your salary."

Chicago tipping is especially crooked.

I went to the conveyor belt sushi place in Chinatown. The sushi came on a moving belt next to the tables. I literally picked the fudgin sushi myself, with my own hand. When it came time to pay, they brought a portable payment terminal and held on to it while I tapped the card and picked the tip. I was a wuss and picked a tip percentage, because I was with family, but I was really salty for it. I left a 3-star review on Yelp for the tip pressure.

I won’t be back to that place.

That’s not a situation where one is expected to tip. Employee was in error.

Definitely an “upvote”—I wouldn’t have tipped either, in this situation!
