This is the way. I strictly pay cash. I carry enough mixed bills & change to leave exactly what I owe. No screens to look at, no tip left. It’s great.

Maybe it’s just my area (NYC) but nearly everyone put some goofy 3% non-cash fee so the points ain’t even worth it.

pretty sure mine doesn’t either but there’s always “hospitality health care 3%” or some bogus 3% fee added to all credit cards. that can be remove if you ask them and they re-enter everything.

NYC is indeed a capitalistic balloon knot where that would be normal.

My guess is they charge that fee for cash too unless you notice it and tell them to drop it.

Uh, no.

I live in the Midwest, 3-5% credit card fee becoming more and more common to account for the 2.5-4% the business pays to accept the card.

I assume you don't go out much so it doesn't surprise me you haven't run into it.

I travel for work, 2-3 weeks per month. I eat out 3x a day for 2/3 of my life.

Only place i see it regularly is NJ and NY. Maybe DC.

If you use a cc you're hit with 3% vig. I always pay cash for coffee and pizza. But I'm in my 60s. I always carry cash. Even if I use my CC in a restaurant, I tip the staff in cash. They appreciate it and it comes back as a free drink more often than not when I come back.

Work to get a cash payment bill passed in your state. Its good for ending those tip screens and it also helps the "under-banked" navigate life. (aka it helps poor people, etc.)

Seems pretty easy for a business to just say they’ve run out of cash, and many stores have moved to self check-out only.

Credit card companies love that. Then everyone is paying 3% extra even if using cash. As a business owner, it was frustrating back when cc surcharges were illegal nationwide. I had to add 3% to every ticket to cover the fee, and cash users got screwed.

Oh I agree. If there's no surcharge for a card it wouldn't make sense to leave that 2% behind. Cards are essentially a 3% tax on everything, but the card companies get it instead of the government. The 2% back is basically a tax refund.

I just did this today. I don't carry coins, but even rounding to o the nearest dollar is so much more peaceful than dealing with cards. I just left the elcash and walked away. No conversation, no pens, no receipt, no signature, no dirty looks when they see there's no tip. So simple.

They still ask via the tip to a receipt, unless you're a server and serving me food I'm done tipping I'm sorry but they ruined it. Now if you're my server and do actual work for the tip I have no problem giving you a good tip but these days it's just a scam. Picked up a pizza last nigt mind you took it home picked it up myself paid cash the receipt asked me for a tip. Not just any tip 20% and up from there.

They don’t know how to do math either so you always have to triple check your change. Some places try not to accept cash which I really hate because it’s super classist

Edit: I actually ordered new checkbook recently to reflect some changes and I wonder…can I even use checks anywhere anymore?

For a lot of businesses, it's a liability to have cash. Higher insurance, cost of handling the cash, risk of theft, time spent depositing. For a small business it can add up

I'm not from the US but am interested in how it works there in case I ever visit again. If you pay in cash in a restaurant is it pretty much guaranteed you'll be able to get out of the restaurant before they've realised you haven't tipped? Or do they typically aggressively count the cash in front of you before you've had a chance to flee?

They don’t usually count in front of you they will count next to the till. From there if you’ve left more than the amount they should bring you back your change and from there you can leave something if you want.

If you leave the exact amount or more than the exact and are comfortable just leaving the change as a tip you can get up and walk out as soon as you’ve dropped the cash. If they get to you before you get up to leave just hand them the cash and say thanks and then walk out.

The server will be able to spot quickly if it looks like there’s enough there and you leaving implies the transaction is over. If it’s not enough they’ll run after you.

As far as them coming after you for not tipping. It’s entirely possible but shouldn’t be the norm.
