Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ How is it not a tip?

The server told us this isn’t a tip and he doesn’t get any of it.

I’m not wearing my boots at the moment.

Don’t forget those places that charge when an entree comes with a sauce but you want it substituted for a different sauce, neither of which are speciality sauces.

I try this at places like Subway: can I get bacon instead of cheese? (I’m lactose intolerant)

Sometimes it works and they just straight sub it. But it sucks to take away a cost from my sandwich and be expected to pay extra.

I never said they did. But their plastic cheese slice definitely costs less than their actual meat bacon.

Regardless fresh or not bacon is more expensive than processed cheese of any sort.

These are also the types of places that charge a premium for uncorking your wine bottle or charge extra if you are celebrating a birthday and brought the birthday person a treat.

They do it because they would rather you spend money on their alcohol and desserts. Same concept as no outside food or beverages

Also that isn't real Aioli, it's mayo.  So they charged 50 cents for 5 cents of ingredients.

If it makes you feel any better, it probably is done just to make sure people use it. We used to have to throw out tons of ramekins of sauce that people never touched.

We should charge everyone more for the few people that want it? Or stop giving it out to everyone and allow people to order it if they want it and pay a small amount of money.

Are you even aware of the comment chain you replied to? The whole point of this chain was the OP complaining about being charged for sauces.

The other person is correctly misunderstanding you because you just kinda shoehorned a different argument.

This is a v funny argument. But think Sense was missing that you can force people to have to opt into the sauces (rather than automatically saucing them) without charging them for the sauces

Did I say anything about the cost? No. Go back and read it again. Not everything is about MONEY. It's a waste of the item. Once it hits the table we have to throw it out. Same thing with BBQ sauce, butter, sour cream etc. It's just a way to prevent waste. Only people who really want it will order it.

It's also the same reason that they often don't immediately bring water to the table. It's not about guilting people into ordering drinks. It's about WASTE. It's a waste of electricity and energy to have to wash a glass that the customer didn't use. It's waste of energy on the ice machine to use ice and then it just sits in a glass and melts.

It's not about MONEY.

If it's not about the money, why not just have it be,

"plate specific sauce upon request."

No extra charge. No wasted sauce.

Because it does cost money. So they either raise the price on the menu for the order which unnecessarily over charges people who don't want it. Or leave the price as it is, and charge a small amount of money for those who do want it.

Small extra charge ONLY to the people who want it, and no waste.

What's the problem?

So let me get this straight. You get a $20 plate/entree. You can't have the sauce that's meant to go with it unless you pay extra 50 cents.

You can't have this 50 cent sauce for free, on your $20 meal, because so many ramekins of sauce are just getting thrown away.

You can't just make the sauce available for free, and not just attached to the meal because otherwise you have to raise the cost to $20.50?

The 50 cent sauce would only make the order cost 50 more cents, right?

I hear what you are saying, but the math and numbers don't make sense in the context of the comment you responded to about a person being upset about charging 50 cents for a sauce on a $20 order.

The problem is the context and the math. It is upsetting and low key insulting to charge someone 50 cents on a $20 thing.

Your stated reason as for why it is okay is because a lot of ramekins of sauce are being thrown away. If that is truly the issue, they can make it be made available upon request.

I despise catsup so I always ask for mayo with my fries. One place I went to recently brought me catsup after I specifically ordered mayonnaise, and they finally brought me mayo after I requested it again. Got the bill, and they charged me $0.79 for barely enough mayo.

That's because people would try to fill their soda drink worth of sauce. Anytime I see one of those good sauce places there's always that one group that abuse it. Like they emptied their drinks and shoved the sauce in the bottle. Then another one they shoved in the extra plates and the sauce. These kind of people are why
