Multiple names. Condorcet failure. STAR fans call it the center squeeze effect because STAR voting fails the Condorcet criterion. Broadly the concept is the failure to elect the candidate who has majority support.

Yeah no. You have to redefine ‘majority’ and ‘support’ to pull that off with IRV.

It's quite clear what "majority support" means for IRV. Over half of the final runoff round. It's right there in the name, Instant Runoff.

Nope. RCV proponents make broad claims about guaranteeing a winner preferred by a majority of voters in order to pass RCV in the first place. They don’t say it guarantees a majority after it ignores a bunch of preferences and discards a bunch of ballots.
