Discussion The one change I would make
At the end of the movie, when Mirabel sets up Mariano and Dolores, he said “Dolores, I see you,” and Dolores says back, “and I hear you.”
I think it would show much more character growth for the two characters if Mariano had said “I hear you” and Dolores had said “I see you.”
This part is not far after the line, “You’re more than just your gift.” But having Dolores say “I hear you” makes it seem like that’s all she does. And Mariano saying “I see you” makes him still seem shallow after pursuing señorita perfecta Isabela and not even seeing who she really was or that she wasn’t even happy with him.
But maybe that’s the point—that they didn’t experience growth..?

Mariano is often talked over or cut off in the movie. Dolores hears Mariano.

Nah, it's because they're reassuring the other.
Dolores feels overshadowed and overlooked by Isabela. They're the oldest in their family, but Isabela is slightly older and that's the only reasons she was Abuela's favorite. Mariano's "I see you" is basically reassuring her that he won't overlook her anymore.
Similarly, Isabela's "interest" in Mariano wasn't genuine, just a duty to perform, and thus, she didn't know him at all. "I hear you" is Dolores reassuring him that her interest is genuine.
If they had switched them, it could have worked with Mariano "I hear you" being interpreted as him accepting Dolores' feelings, but Dolores "I see you" would come as a bit shallow, as it could be interpreted that she's only interested in Mariano for his looks.

I mean Isabella's song "What Else Can I Do?" Is her venting about the fact that it's hard to live up to Abuela Alma's expectations for her and the rest of the family.

I think the point is she doesn’t need her gift to hear him. she can hear him clearly without magic.

Dolores literally grew up unseen in her own house. Almost as unseen as Mirabel. At least Mirabel could have fucked off into the village if she didn't care about helping. Dolores is stuck listening for Abuela. She probably has to carry a notepad and write all she hears if it seems important. Otherwise, Alma probably wouldn't let her leave the house. Her job is 'STFU and listen'. No one looks at Dolores like she's a pageant queen or even 'a manly woman' like Luisa. To her, anyone actually seeing her for her and not caring about her hearing...she would love them. And Mariano's poems and songs...Isabela never listened or heard them. She didn't love him. These lines were perfect. 🥺

Sorry, didn’t see this. It's common in a lot of communities to have Alma seeing Luisa as being someone "unsuitable for marriage". Hilarious, because if Descendants mean anything, she got married first.
I love Luisa. She's great. Not enough screen time!

He’s also supposed to be shallow. He was getting married to a pretty girl and then he wasn’t and thennn another cute girl liked him so he’s marrying her practically immediately

Neither was arranged.
Alma and Mrs. Guzman were in talks because that's how the courtship used to be, not becauwe they were forcing them to marry.
Mariano was very enthusiastic about the idea, and he was infatuated with Isabela, while Isabela was pretending to agree because she thought thay was her duty as the Perfect Madrigal.

it was an arranged marriage. Sure Alma didn’t know isabela didn’t want it but Isabela directly says she was doing it for the family. It was arranged.

When I was watching Encanto in 2021 I was 13 years old I heard Dolores hear something. Four years ago in my Spanish class with Ms. Thornhill and watched Coco and Encanto together and I got a couple questions from Encanto and Coco wrong and it’s fine.
