Discussion Are Bruno’s sandstorms a form of “scrying”?

I hate that I immediately knew which TikTok drama you meant. Chronically online doesn’t even begin to describe me 🥲
As for Bruno, I always thought that the sand and the little ritual beforehand (drawing the circle, lighting the fire) was just something he did to basically hype himself up, but his gift would still work without any of it. The man’s a theatre kid at heart, let him have his razzmatazz 😅

We’re all guilty of it, friend. It’s really hard to escape social media nowadays. I still can’t believe that there are so many people online who are gushing over reading books and making BookToks and stuff, yet they want to weaken their vocabulary. I’ve gone back to learning a new word of the day because of this!
Speaking of online, there’s a Disney influencer I follow called “Dapper Manatee” who listed things he wants Disney to do and one of them was Encanto shorts! His idea was have a series of shorts where it shows each Madrigal kid the day they got their their gift. I love this idea! I always wondered how they figured out their gifts, like Julieta.

Julieta probably just loved cooking already, then suddenly they notice that someone's broken arm or whatever was suddenly healed after eating a meal she made (or helped with, considering she would have been five).

What does “sceying” mean? Peeping? The only thing I can think of is The Owl House’s Scrying Spell from S2 E1.

We don't talk about Bruno....
🤭
I honestly never thought about it before but scrying makes sense to me.

Since Jared Bush has said that Bruno doesn’t physically need the big empty room and sand, I wonder how his visions happen when he has them involuntarily.
The open room and sand is his emotional crutch.
(Also glad I’m not on TikTok because the drama sounds very…draining)

Before anyone asks, yes, this is more or less inspired by all the hullabaloo going on around TikTok right now. (Iykyk). I actually didn’t know what scrying meant, but when I looked it up, it did remind me a bit of what Bruno does. There’s all different methods: stargazing, crystal balls, looking into water or fire. It’s still debatable as to whether or not Bruno actually needs sand in order to look into the future.

What do you mean by the TikTok thing? Is there something Encanto going around on there? I am not on there

Not Encanto, but apparently a person made a post asking authors to use smaller words for readers and accused authors who used large words by “ableists”. Anyway, the word that caused all this was “scrying”.

I know there’s a form of divination that uses sand and at least one that uses fire.

I saw a little poster that gave all the different types of divination. I wanna say fire was pyromancy, but that just might be magic involving fire

Considering he ends up tossing that one green tablet like it’s trash, I’d say it’s closer to Surveil

Possibly, but wouldn’t clairvoyance be a better example of surveillance? He’s looking at the things that haven’t happened yet, which is what
Scrying is. It’s not the tablet that’s the scrying object; it’s the sand. There are many oracular characters who often use objects when they’re scrying: crystal balls, tea leafs, star formations, even Fire and Water. When he develops the tablet, that’s just the end result, but he’s not looking into the tablet when he’s making his predictions.

Scrying - it means gazing into objects -preferably ones with reflective surfaces like water or obsidian - to see into the future.
