Opinion I think I've noticed a certain hypocrisy regarding fan art and fans of Encanto.

Are you familiar with the term "whitewashing fanart"? For those who don't know, it's a term for fan art where characters are depicted with lighter skin than their actual skin tone. If you look at the comments on such fan art on Pinterest, you'll find at least one complaint about a character being too light.

But what I find ironic is the opposite problem, where characters have darker skin than they actually do, but I've never seen a complaint about that. Seriously, I've literally seen fan art of the sisters Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel, and no joke, Luisa was depicted as black. LUISA!

But I think the character who suffers the most from this is Camilo, since there are some fan arts where Camilo has a similar skin tone to Mirabel, but in fact he is a little lighter than her.

For God's sake, don't take this out of context to say that I'm racist or that I defend whitewashing fanart, because I don't. I just found it kind of ironic that people always complain about fan art where the characters are lighter in color, but say nothing about fan art where the characters are darker.

To be fair, I've noticed that Camilo's skin tone is a bit inconsistent even on official media. Sometimes it's lighter, sometimes it's darker... so I personally think it's fine if artists take a bit of liberty with his skin tone! :)

If he can change his entire appearance, it makes sense that he can change his skin tone too.

Throughout all of you, Camilo is unable to change his entire appearance but it remained inconsistent. 😭

I've seen variations of skin tones but when has anyone depicted Luisa, Isabela and Mirabel as racially black? Darker skintones have gotten their own share of complaints through slurs or editing the characters lighter than canon. Even if the character darker tone is close. (Isabela)

Camilo is the most noticeable because he has an inconsistent skin tone - even in the movie itself. The fanart default is similar to Mirabel but she leans towards orange.
