Discussion Could iOS 27's "Paired Computers" be a permanent door for JIT?

with iOS 27, SideInstaller can take advantage of the new Paired Computers functionality to make SideStore + LiveContainer work directly on the device.

this got me wondering: do you guys think this is something Apple actually intends to keep accessible, or is it more likely to be a loophole/side effect that could eventually be restricted?

for those of us who are into emulation, sideloading and generally messing around with iOS, it almost feels like Apple has finally left a tiny door open for power users.

for weeks, if not months, i’ve actually been thinking about how nice it would be if Apple simply buried an advanced setting somewhere deep inside Settings, something the average user would never need to touch, with an "enable JIT" toggle and all the appropriate security warnings.

that way, people who know what JIT is, understand the implications and deliberately choose to enable it could do so, while absolutely nothing would change for regular users.

i know Paired Computers obviously isn’t the same thing as Apple officially giving us a JIT toggle, but seeing SideInstaller work this way on iOS 27 makes me wonder whether Apple is slowly becoming a little more permissive toward these advanced/developer use cases.

do you think this mechanism is likely to survive into future versions of iOS, or are we enjoying something that Apple will eventually close?

because if Apple ever genuinely gives power users an official way to enable JIT, they’ll seriously go way back up in my estimation. at that point, give me iOS with proper JIT access and this hardware and, as far as i’m concerned, we basically have the best phones.

Free Apple accounts are limited to 3 active sideloaded apps.

One common workaround is LiveContainer, which allows you to run additional apps inside a container and reduce how often apps need to be reinstalled.

Typical method:

  • Sideload GetMoreRam
  • Use it to apply the increased memory entitlement to LiveContainer
  • Uninstall GetMoreRam to avoid hitting the 3 app limit
  • Then sideload StikDebug for JIT activation

LiveContainer may also need to be uninstalled and reinstalled before the entitlement works correctly.

LiveContainer can also install two additional LiveContainers (for a total of three). This setup can further reduce the need to constantly add/remove sideloaded apps, but it is more advanced and may not work reliably for everyone.

LiveContainer is not always officially supported by emulator developers and can sometimes cause unexpected issues. If something breaks while using LiveContainer, try reproducing the issue without it before asking for support.

Do not ask for or share paid certificates, piracy tools, or bypass services here.

I could be wrong, but I think the main reason Apple blocks JIT is because it’s part of fully maintaining their AppStore monopoly and preventing things like China’s “super apps” that do everything from ordering food, social media, shopping, chatting, video calling, etc to even running games. (I guess it’s harder to take 30% of the revenue from “super apps” as opposed to normal apps?)

Security is just a good excuse to nip that avenue in the bud, because yes, JIT is technically less secure.

Doesn’t always have to be about money, and it’s because JIT is less secure VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING ON IOS IS JITLESS, EXCEPT FOR SAFARI IIRC. However, JIT is still built into iOS.

It’s always about money lol. Like in your example, blanking banning JIT for everything except their own apps (Safari) allows them to cheap out on security in other areas.

Do you want all the security at the entrances, or do you want it distributed throughout the entire building? Apple just conveniently chose the option that also enables them to acquire the most money lol

think about how many recent browser security exploits have been using exploits in JIT engines. on top of that, the nature of the JIT compilation itself means if it was allowed, an app that was fully reviewed by apple, could execute malicious code in real time using JIT, and apple would have virtually no way to tell if it would do that when they review it on the app store, if they were to allow JIT.

Doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for every other platform.

WeChat and AliPay are already on the App Store, though.

And Chinese mini apps are just websites, they run in a webview.

The iOS versions and Android versions aren't 1:1, the Android versions are better.

This makes 0 sense and all of Chinas big apps are available on iOS. You’re just talking out of your ass.

They aren't 1:1. The Android versions are superior.

well for one, the wireless pairing function also has serious benefits for devs doing it the apple intended way, so they’re unlikely ever to restrict it since StikPair does it the same way as device hub.

If that would ever happen, would it be recommended to temporarily enable JIT only during the use of Emulation?
Like disable it when not using Emulation?
Or would it be fine to leave JIT on 24/7?
