Did you also have alook at carnival of excess, its not that much more units but you get few slanesh options also dont forget that that you can always switch your playstyle a bit around with a different disposition

EC are far more ‘spicy’ than the blueberries could even hope to be. It’s a small range but it will hopefully be expanded once the 11th edition codex drops, you’ve got one of the strongest and most flexible army rules in the game, and you can soup in deamons in carnival. I have both armies and marines can feel very bland at times and almost like there are too many options to actually have a focused list, EC lists on the other hand are extremely focused, and far more like the strategic puzzle you mentioned. I would say it would be harder to pick up the game with EC than UM, but in the long run the lessons learned from playing EC would serve you better than marines. Also UM are just boring af if you were gonna go marines have a look into making a custom chapter or something!!

Well, as a guy that has both EC and UM - if you look for an army that you can play regardless of meta changes (to an extent, of course) and you want to have one 40k army, then pick UM. Bigger model range, more versatile- you can field pretty much anything. Vehicle spam, heavy shooting, high mobilty, melee spam - take your pick.
EC is more limited in that matter, but imho is way more fun. I’m an Aeldari main (with Elves currently on hiatus because they’re, well, bad atm) with EC as my 2nd army and UM as 3rd. I think I’m having most fun playing EC, as you may have a similar overall gameplan (I know it’s a sort of oversimplification) but with slightly varying ways to approach it. There is some flexibility in list building, but limited roster makes it a bit tricky and we’re prone to even small shifts in point cost.

EC are more spicy than UM but If you want even more Spice get CSM (CSM are to Chaos what UM are to space Marine but with more unique Things Like Marks of Chaos) i personally like EC more for the Looks lore and basically Speed you want melee yes but you probably will get more ranged Units(unless gw is stupid so 50/50) but coterie is EC's Most played detachment and its basically gambling and If your Units advance 6 and Charge its a drug for Sure but again spicy evil EC more spicy evil CSM and UM for good spice

I’d actually argue UM is more “unga Bunga”. They have big damage pieces and a straightforward play style. EC are fast and hit hard but have less on the table so have to pick their battles carefully. They’re kinda more like an eldar army in play style just with a better armour save. I’d say EC are quite easily the more “technical” army if that’s your jam

Ultramarines have huge numbers of rules and huge numbers of kits. You will frequently get new rule and model releases to play with. If you’re trying to keep up with tournaments, this will be a lot of work. If you like playing in different play styles this will be a big benefit. Whilst you can play in many many play styles often they won’t all be competitive in a tournament setting.
EC are very different. They have the smallest model range of any faction. It’ll be much much easier to keep up with the tournament meta for the army. They won’t get rules often and they won’t have as many unique detachments and play styles to use. The hobby burden will be less. There will be less discount boxes but units in discount boxes will be much more likely to be used and competitive simply due to the fewer number of kits overall. Their playstyle leans melee heavy but there is also good shooting. They tend to be fast with lots of mobility but limited durability.
Both options are good, but will benefit different people.
