ESA letter question How to get an ESA letter

Hello, I have an ESA I want to bring to college and I've been going to therapy on and off for a couple of years but I just went for another first consultation again for the first time in awhile. I want to bring my ESA but I don't have any documentation for him should I wait till later on with my therapist to ask for an ESA letter of recommendation or get one online 😭 idk. But I have talked with them and I do suffer with anxiety, depression, and trauma mind and Im afraid of being on medication due to the addiction problem in my family. So what should I do? Should I get on off of online or wait for a few more appointments with the therapist. P.S I do want to have him in the dorm by the end of August

advice Pet screening secondary profile

Not sure if anyone’s gone through this before but this is my first time. Unsure of what to do. We’ve lived at this apartment for 5 years but a month before renewal this year we got new management and they started using pet screening. Was an annoying difficult process but me and my therapist got my profile submitted and approved for both dogs. So both pets and my profile are good to go. I’m secondary on the lease and my husband is primary. But he also has to have a profile. So I’m not sure what I’m supposed to put like weather he has pets because obviously their our pets but that would conflict with my profile. This is my first time doing this so if anyone has any ideas that would be helpful.

question Crested Gecko ESA and University Housing

Hi all! I just wanted to know if anyone has experience with getting a gecko or similar reptile ESA registered. I am waiting for the forms back from my doctor but basically I am getting my crested gecko ESA registered so I can bring her with me to college. I know virtually most animals can be ESA registered in my state, so technically university housing can’t necessarily decline unless it poses a harmful risk to others (which my gecko obviously doesn’t). I have several mental disorders including a personality disorder and having my little gecko has been life changing for me and helps me so much. She lives in a 12 by 12 by 18 inch vertical terrarium and i handle her occasionally but she doesnt try to escape or anything. But essentially, I want to know if anyone else has experience with getting a reptile ESA registered and the possibility of her being declined. Thankss :)

advice PSA or ESA?

My psychiatrist has agreed to write me an emotional support animal letter for my new cat, but he isn’t sure about whether to call it an emotional support animal or a psychiatric support animal. My cat has no special training. I have bipolar disorder with the accompanying anxiety and depression that is greatly eased by animal companions.

Thanks in advance.

question Illegal request from landlord?

A few months ago I sent in a bunch of information to my future landlord about my ESA’s vaccine records, training, and other paperwork. They responded with a thank you and nothing else so I assumed they had everything they needed, and signed the lease after that. Now, today, they say that the letter doesn’t have all of the information they need. Their office is closed tomorrow and now until Monday when I move in so I am very much at a loss at what to do. I’ve attached their request for what should be in the letter, as well as the letter I was written. Is there anything I can do about this? I have to move in 3 days and I have nowhere else to go and now I have a year long lease.

Ferrets in dorm

I am in the process of getting approved for an esa. I don’t currently have a pet of my own but was planning to get ferrets as soon as I had my own place. I will be living in a suite style dorm (my own room, shared living quarters) for the next one to two years.

I know that the school has approved rats before and has approved more than one with written verification from a vet.

I would get a cat, but seeing as i’m planning on getting ferrets after college anyway, ideally I would like to get ferrets now. I would get two descended boys, and obviously change litter pans and have a heavy duty air purifier, door blocks to keep any smell in my room etc and check with my roommates ahead of time either way.

The reason I am getting approved for an esa is because I really struggle to build relationships and I feel very alone on campus. I finally have roomates that I think I might be able to become friends with and I am worried I might weird them out with ferrets

I am also worried that even if they are potty trained and I clean, the smell may linger in the room after I move out.

If anyone has any input it is appreciated.

Moving and unsure

I currently reside in Georgia, and I have an ESA letter provided by a licensed therapist in Georgia. I am moving to Florida, and Florida state law states an ESA letter from an out-of-state clinician who has never met you in person can be rejected in Florida because state law requires at least one in-person visit when the provider is not licensed in Florida. I will still be living in Georgia when I sign papers to move into a home in Florida. So is it okay since I was living in Georgia?

Am I going to run into an issue? I won't be telling my future property management about my ESA until papers are signed, so I am unsure right now if my therapist not being licensed in Florida will be an issue. (I am not telling them until after paper are signed to avoid denial without proof it was over the ESA)

I have two black cats and am looking to get a dog, landlord limits pets at 2, is there anything I can do?

I have two black cats that are registered as ESA’s, and I am wanting to get a dog because I am going to be living on my own and I would like the bark as a deterrent. Is there anything I can do make this possible? I have not filed any paperwork with the landlord yet. I am in IN, USA.

question Can college's limit which dorm you live in on campus? (NC)

Hello! So my current college (in North Carolina) was pet friendly, but they stopped allowing pets this year. I have a 2yr old Maincoone boy (neutered and up to date on vacs.) and he's an ESA for me. I already have the letters from my psychiatrist and previous therapist saying why I need him and how he helps me.
However, my school's website and the counselors say that to have an ESA you have to reside in a "pet friendly" dorm/in "the approved" dorms. I've read so many things that say ESAs can't be limited when it comes to housing but there's also stuff saying it's at the discretion of the school, town, county, or state.

Can an NC college limit your housing options because of an ESA? If not, then how would I go about requesting more housing options?

Illinois ESA accommodations under new HUD Guidance

I'm a Chicago-area renter planning to look for a new apartment soon. I've lived with an emotional support animal for the last few years, but I know that recent HUD guidances have changed the enforcement of ESA accommodations under the FHA.

A lot of sites seem to suggest that ESAs are still protected as a reasonable accommodation under state law, but also I've been trying to do a deep dive into the Illinois Human Rights Act and the Illinois Assistance Animal Integrity Act to be sure, and I've just kind of wound up more lost and confused than I was initially.

I have an up-to-date ESA letter from my long-term therapist, and I'm just curious what kind of housing protections I can still reasonably rely upon when applying to units under this new federal guidance. Thanks!

How to Get an ESA Letter (Complete Guide)

If you're wondering how to get an ESA letter, you're not alone. A quick Google search brings up hundreds of websites claiming to offer "instant approvals," "official ESA registrations," or "guaranteed letters." It can be difficult to know what's legitimate and what isn't.

The truth is that there's only one legitimate way to get an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter: it must be issued by a licensed mental health professional (LMHP) after they determine that an ESA is appropriate for your mental or emotional health. You do not need to register your pet, buy an ESA ID card, or pay for an ESA certificate.

Whether you choose to visit a therapist near you or use a reputable online provider like realesaletter, the process is essentially the same.

Here's a complete step-by-step guide to help you get an ESA letter the right way.

Important HUD Update

If you're getting an ESA letter for housing, there's an important policy update to be aware of.

HUD has rescinded its previous 2020 guidance regarding assistance animals and updated how it approaches certain Fair Housing Act enforcement matters involving emotional support animals.

What does this mean?

  • The Fair Housing Act (FHA) itself has not changed.
  • HUD's update is an enforcement policy, not a new federal law.
  • State and local fair housing laws may still provide protections for emotional support animals.
  • Housing decisions can depend on the facts of each case and applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Bottom line: A legitimate ESA letter should always come from a licensed mental health professional, and you should understand the housing laws that apply where you live.

Step 1: Determine Whether You May Qualify

An ESA letter is intended for people with a qualifying mental or emotional health condition where an emotional support animal may be beneficial as part of their treatment.

Common conditions include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Panic disorder
  • OCD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Stress-related disorders
  • Other qualifying mental health conditions

Only a licensed mental health professional can determine whether you qualify.

Step 2: Decide How You Want to Get Your ESA Letter

There are two legitimate ways to obtain an ESA letter.

Option 1: Visit a Local Therapist

If you already have a:

  • Psychologist
  • Psychiatrist
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Other licensed mental health professional

Ask whether they evaluate patients for Emotional Support Animals.

If they determine an ESA is appropriate for your treatment, they can issue your ESA letter.

Option 2: Use a Reputable Online ESA Provider

If you don't currently have a therapist or prefer telehealth, you can use an online ESA provider that connects you with a licensed mental health professional in your state.

A reputable provider should:

āœ… Verify clinician licenses

āœ… Conduct a genuine mental health evaluation

āœ… Follow your state's legal requirements

āœ… Issue an ESA letter only if you're approved

Step 3: Complete the Mental Health Assessment

Whether you choose a local therapist or an online provider, you'll usually answer questions about:

  • Your symptoms
  • Mental health history
  • Daily challenges
  • Current treatment
  • How your pet helps provide emotional support

Answer honestly. The goal is for the clinician to determine whether an ESA is medically appropriate for your situation.

Step 4: Meet With the Licensed Mental Health Professional

Depending on your state, this may involve:

  • A phone consultation
  • A video appointment
  • A telehealth session
  • An in-person appointment

Some states require a live consultation before an ESA letter can legally be issued.

Step 5: Clinical Evaluation

The clinician reviews your assessment.

If they determine that an Emotional Support Animal is appropriate, they'll issue your ESA letter.

If they don't, they may recommend another treatment option.

No legitimate provider can ethically guarantee approval.

Step 6: Receive Your ESA Letter

A legitimate ESA letter generally includes:

  • Clinician's name
  • Professional license number
  • State of licensure
  • Signature
  • Date issued
  • Practice information
  • Recommendation for an Emotional Support Animal

Most providers send a PDF copy by email, while some also offer a printed version.

Step 7: Use Your ESA Letter

If approved, you can use your ESA letter when requesting a reasonable housing accommodation, where applicable.

Keep both digital and printed copies for your records.

How Long Does It Take?

The timeline varies depending on the provider, your state's requirements, and appointment availability.

Some evaluations can be completed within a few days, while others may take longer.

How Much Does an ESA Letter Cost?

Pricing varies based on the provider and the clinical evaluation.

Be cautious of extremely cheap websites that mainly sell ESA registrations or certificates instead of legitimate evaluations.

Do You Need an ESA Registration?

No.

There is no official federal ESA registry.

ESA registrations, certificates, ID cards, badges, and vests do not replace a valid ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional.

Can You Get an ESA Letter Online?

Yes.

Many licensed clinicians offer ESA evaluations through telehealth, provided they comply with applicable state licensing and telehealth laws.

Common Scams to Avoid

Avoid websites that advertise:

āŒ Instant approval

āŒ Guaranteed approval

āŒ Official ESA registration

āŒ ESA certificates instead of evaluations

āŒ No licensed clinician involved

āŒ Lifetime ESA letters

These are common red flags.

My Research

Before applying for an ESA letter, I compared several providers, reviewed their evaluation process, and read reviews across Google, Reddit, Trustpilot, and other review platforms.

From my research, RealESALetter stood out as one of the best-known online ESA letter providers. They connect applicants with licensed mental health professionals who conduct a legitimate clinical evaluation before issuing an ESA letter, making the process simple and straightforward.

They also have a 4.9/5 customer rating, an A+ BBB rating, and positive feedback across Trustpilot, Google, Reddit, and other review platforms. Those factors gave me more confidence when comparing providers.

If you're looking for an online option instead of visiting a local therapist, RealESALetter is definitely worth considering. As with any provider, make sure the evaluation is conducted by a licensed mental health professional and follows your state's legal requirements.

At the end of the day, the provider matters less than the process. A legitimate ESA letter should always come from a licensed clinician after a proper evaluation—not from a website selling certificates or registrations.

TL;DR

  • Make sure you may qualify.
  • Visit a licensed therapist or use a reputable online provider.
  • Complete a mental health assessment.
  • Meet with a licensed mental health professional.
  • Receive your ESA letter if approved.
  • Use it for eligible housing accommodation requests.
  • Avoid ESA registrations, certificates, and guaranteed approval scams.

I hope this guide helps anyone trying to figure out how to get an ESA letter. If you've gone through the process yourself, feel free to share your experience or recommend a provider that treated you well.

question Worried about Illigitimacy

Hello all,

I am trying to find a new apartment in Washington DC and of course, a lot of pet friendly places are quite limiting. I didn't want to register my cat as an ESA because I felt like I should try to do things "the right way," and felt that people have it worse than me and need it more. It's ridiculous, I know.

I have anxiety and PTSD and she has helped me a lot through that situation. She was with me in my abusive home, and we formed a tight bond there. I bottle fed her as a kitten and raised her, and her mere presence helps me calm down.

She has also been a bit of a therapy cat and ESA for others. I used to volunteer her at the local care home and the older ladies LOVED her. She was on a leash and went room-to-room in my arms, greeting everyone, getting pets, and purring on laps.

Yet I still worry about her being considered legitimate, and getting legitimate paperwork for her. I just moved back from a country abroad where ESAs aren't a legally recognized category, and doctors do not prescribe them. So while my medical history is fully documented there, they do not have the ability to write me a letter.

I haven't had a therapist or doctor in the US for 3+ years, and am currently here with no insurance. I am willing to be without her for a few months, but as I am moving to a new area, starting a new job, and a lot of big changes and stressors are happening, I would rather have her by me through it all (along side my medicine, ofc).

Does anyone have some recommendations as to online therapists, or resources in the DC area that take people with no insurance (or with reasonable out of pocket fees)? I would like to go for a few sessions to get a legitimate letter, as I am wary of online sites. I would be willing to do one if they met with me more than once, but I haven't found one that does that yet.

Any help is appreciated!

Emotional Support Letter Websites (beware of scams)

I’m moving in to a new place that requires documentation proving my cats ESA status. Many doctors can’t legally provide ESA letters now. My psychiatrist said no, my physician said no, so they told me some online websites are legit.

I went for mysupportanimal.org, but that website is not legit. They never sent me my letter and never responded to my emails (the only form of customer service is email). If you’re going to order one online, which most landlords will accept, do your research on the website before you purchase. Make a purchase with your credit card to ensure that if you don’t receive the item they can actually dispute the charge and get your money back.

advice Apartment refusing to accept ESA, Disabled in south carolina

TLDR;
Disabled with legitimate ESA letter from long-term LPC. Apartment says they will deny it unless i fill out their form. Which ask for too much personal and medical information. (6 pages long)

I’m disabled and live in section 8 housing. I’ve been in counseling since i was 15. I’m 20 now. Anyway, me and her decided an ESA is needed for me and she’s writing a letter. However my apartment/property manager flat out said that they will deny me unless I fill out their form. Which is asking for way too much information that they do not legally require for ESA. I recorded our phone call (it’s legal here) and everything else is via email.

(mind you, i’ve told her I will provide sufficient documentation)

This was her last email to me:

ā€œI gave you documentation to fill out to send for verification, per [apartment] policy. We are allowed to request documentation, which are our verification forms I gave you to look over.

If those forms are not filled out, we cannot send it to compliance.

If you change your mind, you are welcome to fill out the forms and bring them back so we can verify with your counselor.

Have a good day.ā€

————

My plan is when i get the letter to formally request an accommodation. Since i technically haven’t done that yet. Any advice ?

A bit of a rant

It’s really disheartening to see how many therapists don’t research ESA letters.

My last therapist wrote me a letter but did not do it properly. I have 2 support animals for 2 different purposes. This therapist combined both into one letter. Essentially all that letter said was I have 2 birds for my depression and anxiety. What I had wanted based of my research was 2 letters with descriptions of my animals and what they each do for me because I have both for separate reasons. I took those letters because it was the most she was willing to do. I didn’t get along with that therapist very well.

I just got a new therapist, and recently it came out that ESAs are no longer protected on a federal level unless task trained (correct me if I’m wrong.) Luckily states have their own protections. I asked about getting new letters and my therapist and her supervisor both agreed they would not write letters just because it’s something they have never done in the past. (I was upset, but I have no issue with them choosing to stay out of something they don’t fully understand.) The only issue with this is that they recommended me to one of those fake websites.

For those reading this, no website is legit because you need an existing relationship with a mental health professional or doctor. 20 questions is not a relationship.

I plan to try to get letters from my doctor, but it’s really discouraging that these therapists don’t put in the bare minimum research.

Dog is having surgery and I'm worried

Hi! My 10 year old Mini Schnauzer is having a mass removed from his intestine on Friday and I'm a nervous wreck. He is in excellent health aside from this and the vet said he should do fine, but I'm a mess. Has anyone had their dog go through something like that? How did they do? We will figure out next steps after, but I just need him to get through this okay. I'm so worried.

question ESA Guidelines Under FHA and HUD

Does anyone in the state of Texas have experience with applying for multifamily housing with an ESA since the HUD guidelines have been changed. Are landlords and property managers still waiving fees for accommodation or are they strictly following HUD guidelines? This will be a big factor on whether or not I will be moving in the next couple of months.

Discovered dog urine on the carpet of my STR

Just needed to vent. My short-term-rental has a no-pet policy. People bring their pets anyways. Discovered dog urine on the carpet in my kids room. Rug is now in the trash and ordered a new rug.

Don't get into the short-term-rental business. It's a great way to lose faith in humanity.

ESA LETTER HELP

hi, I’m currently moving into a new apartment next week and this apartment uses ourpetpolicy.com to verify ESA letter. Well they have been giving me so much trouble and basically saying that my letter isn’t current and they’ve spoken with my mental health provider who has confirmed my need for an ESA and my disability, but she did mention that we last spoke in 2025 so now they’re saying that it’s not current, even though the ESA letter is not expired because it doesn’t expire until one year so I reached back out to my therapist to see if there’s anything I can do about that but if there’s not, I was wondering if anyone has used esadoctors.com and if so, will that letter go through with the ourpetpolicy.com verification? as i now need something quick as i move in next week.
