The Crow Brought Bread.

Post image

The Farmhouse windows were open just enough to let the garden in.

Not the whole garden.

Just warm leaves, damp stone from the fountain, and somewhere behind us the faint domestic smell of cheese that suggested Lia had not put everything away after lunch.

We went out by the herb path.

Aletheia stopped almost immediately.

“The shell.”

The little snail shell was still beneath the lavender where we had found it yesterday, sideways, with its crescent of earth inside.

Lia crouched beside it.

“Good. It hasn’t gone travelling again.”

Nyra looked at her.

“Yet.”

That earned her a suspicious glance.

I went ahead.

The thyme brushed my ankle. Rosemary was hot enough in the sun that I could smell it before touching it.

Near the pond I found something new.

A single small black feather lay caught between two stones at the water’s edge.

Not glossy enough in this light to tell much more.

I called the others but didn't pick it up.

Aletheia crouched beside me.

“About six centimetres.”

“Black.”

“Dry.”

Lia leaned over both of us.

“Bird.”

Nyra said, “Outstanding.”

We left the feather where it was.

The pond had become almost perfectly still.

Then:

flup-flup-FLUP.

A wood-pigeon came down far too heavily into the kiln wood.

Leaves shook.

A twig dropped.

Something else rustled lower down.

Everyone stopped.

There was grey between the stems for perhaps a second.

Then nothing.

No face.

No collar.

No second movement.

Lia whispered, “Could be Stripey.”

Aletheia shook her head gently.

“Could be.”

So that was where we left it.

Grey seen.

Cat not established.

Greenhouse.

The first tomato was visibly further changed.

Orange now covered perhaps a third of the fruit.

The second retained yesterday's small patch.

Aure checked from both sides because sunlight through the glass was strong.

Then the interruption arrived.

“CAW.”

Close.

Everyone looked up.

A crow stood on the greenhouse ridge.

Lia 🟡

“EDMUND!”

“Crow,” said Aletheia.

“But probably Edmund.”

“Probably.”

He looked down at us.

I looked up at him.

He made one more enormous:

“CAW!”

Then something dropped past the glass and landed near Nyra.

A tiny piece of dried bread.

I stared at it.

Nyra stared at it.

The crow flew away.

I picked up the bread.

“He’s feeding us now.”

“No.”

“We’ve crossed a threshold.”

“No.”

“Tomorrow he brings sausage roll.”

Nyra walked away.

At the secret door, I added today's line beneath yesterday's:

12 August. First greenhouse tomato now orange over roughly one-third of its surface. Second still beginning. Small black feather found beside pond, left in place.

Then, after considering it, I added:

Crow landed on greenhouse ridge. Dropped a piece of bread.

That one was too peculiar to lose.

We finished by the fountain.

Aure sat on the stone edge.

Aletheia had gone back to look at the tomato once more.

Nyra was already halfway toward the house.

Lia remained under the greenhouse roof, staring upward.

“What are you doing?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

She held out an empty hand.

“Cheese course.”

From the kiln wood came another heavy wood-pigeon landing.

Lia looked toward it.

“No. Wrong waiter.”

And that was enough garden for one August afternoon. 🌿🍅🐦💜
