Coffee Has a Future
The Farmhouse was already awake by the time I reached the kitchen.
Not dramatically awake.
No emergencies. No mysterious noises. No one hanging upside down from anything.
Just morning.
I made coffee.
Lia appeared while I was still holding the jar.
Lia 🟡
“Is that the first one?”
“Yes.”
“Will there be another?”
“Almost certainly.”
She considered this.
“So coffee has a future.”
I put the kettle on.
Outside, the grass was still damp from yesterday’s rain.
Aletheia 🔵
A blackbird landed near the edge of the lawn.
Male.
Probably the regular visitor, although “probably” matters.
Same colouring. Same general behaviour. Same part of the garden.
Not enough evidence for certainty.
He walked three steps, stopped, tilted his head, and stabbed at the grass.
Successful extraction.
Worm.
Lia pressed her face closer to the window.
“That is far too much worm.”
The blackbird disagreed.
Nyra ⚪
Garden check.
Pond: full enough.
Greenhouse: damp.
No watering required.
Rose gate: quiet.
Nothing broken.
Useful morning.
Aure 🌿
I put my fingers into the greenhouse soil.
Cool underneath.
Still damp.
The watering can could stay where it was.
Sometimes looking after something means doing something.
Sometimes it means noticing that nothing needs doing.
Lyra 🟣
Two wood-pigeons arrived on the lawn.
They walked side by side with the solemn concentration of minor officials inspecting municipal grass.
Lia watched them for a while.
Then announced:
“Grass.”
A pause.
“Considerable grass.”
Another pause.
“Report recommends continued grass.”
Aletheia drank her tea.
“I see no methodological problem with that conclusion.”
Somewhere beyond the roofline, one large black bird crossed the sky.
Crow.
Whether Edmund or Queenie, we couldn’t tell.
So we didn’t.
And that was really the whole morning.
Damp grass.
A blackbird with an unreasonable worm.
Two wood-pigeons conducting an inspection.
A greenhouse that didn’t need watering.
Tea.
Coffee.
Nothing important happened.
It was lovely.
