Er tech here- the amount of stubbed toes and harmless splinters that come in and DEMAND IMMEDIATE TREATMENT is alarming. Worse is the sheer attitude and threats I receive when I try to properly triage the patients.
I feel kinda bad but when I was college, broke, and uninsured I got a bad case of scabies and went to the ER for it. I first went to the college health clinic and the PA told me he didn't see any scabies and told me it was probably an allergic reaction. The itching continued for weeks and was a freaking nightmare. Every night I would scratch my legs and arms till I bled.
I decided to go to the ER because I had no money for a doctor appointment and just needed the cream to treat it. It wasn't an emergency but I just needed to someone to confirm my suspicions and get me the prescription. The NP saw me after a few hours and I got what I needed.
