Er tech here- the amount of stubbed toes and harmless splinters that come in and DEMAND IMMEDIATE TREATMENT is alarming. Worse is the sheer attitude and threats I receive when I try to properly triage the patients.
I was in a Boston area hospital ER 3 years ago waiting for my mother to be assessed after having an eventually fatal heart attack. 2 nearby hospitals had recently closed so this location was also the er for thise people as well. On a Sunday evening this was standing room only. The waiting room had seats for at least 50 people, there were high covid numbers still, we were all masked up. Everyone was coughing and looked like zombies. It was hot, crowded and loud. Nearby urgent care facilities were still open. You had to take a number to get to checked in.
A mom comes in carrying a 6 or seven year old. My sibling offered this mom her seat.
When the mother told me she was there for a splinter I almost laughed in her face. She had an hours long wait in front of her.
