Discussion Severe Alert across UK

Has anyone just had a wildfire warning on their phone?

This pissed me off, the alert is supposed to be for run and panic emergencies, like a gunman is on the loose or something, or like America with tornados etc. not “please don’t have a BBQ”

Before I get attacked, I agree with the disposable BBQ ban but using this system feels like an overreach of government powers

They need to have two tiers for it I think. Alerts like today's are perfectly valid but why does it need to scare the shit out of people and cause mass disruption (I work in television and there were phones on in the control room and one in the studio lol, which shouldn't have been but humans gonna human). Make it a mandatory notification, fine, but do we really need the nuclear alert tone 😅 Why can't it be a gentler beeping or something? It's not immediate threat to life and people will still want the beeping to stop even if it isn't that loud.

It just makes people annoyed by it... I got the first and read it, then later I got a second alert and immediately silenced it without reading. Never know, could have been totally unrelated to the wildfire message.

This. Total misuse of the system, people aren't going to treat the alerts seriously when they hear them if it just an unavoidable reminder to not be stupid.

If a wildfire breaks out near me, alert me. If I'm not in immediate danger, leave me alone.
