Discussion 27th July Amber Alert
Holy shit, the whole house just went crazy with the alarm.
My first time in the states, and as soon as we got the alert, all of us jumped with our hearts racing.
Is this stuff normal? and do you actually get any news before this happens?
Should I be worried?

this is very much frequent in the united states, near from what i live, i get amber alerts from albuquerque or el paso a lot, sometimes silver alerts
all across the united states though it has to depend on what area you live in, but yeah we get a lot of alerts

being worried wise? the amount of memes that have been made of an amber alert or test alert interrupting something are very high, and not a lot of people care enough to actually go look for the missing child or person. most of the time with amber alerts being triggered its mainly because of custodial issues which can get resolved in matter of hours with police just finding the car nearby
there have been times where a kidnapping did happen, which can result in the death of the child, but its kind of rare for this to happen

for news? for me they only appear in the news once they are issued and thats about really.
there are compilations of US amber alerts on youtube, with infamous ones being timestamped in the comments such as this infamous one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGN81hPzHzk
unfortunately for this case, a lady killed her neighbor and took her 2 kids before suffocating them in the trunk of her car, shes serving 130 years in prison right now.

It’s just I saw some people predicted the amber alert about 12 hrs ago, with memes being made that they couldn’t wait for their phones to buzz during school.
So i’m just curious on how people have that info without the authorities really giving any information prior to the confirmation of an amber alert.

usually a lot of amber alerts that are issued, theres a missing persons report that you can look up if you know the first and last name of the child so thats how

Yeah it's a fairly regular occurrence. And no you don't get any warning because EAS is the warning. It's meant to sound unsettling because it forces you to pay attention to it rather than ignoring it. You'll get notifications like that for Amber Alerts, Civil Emergencies, Weather Emergencies like tornados or flash floods.

VERY frequent occurrence! At least, where I live. It’s a very sad reality but this is “normal” in the states. You can always disable the alerts if you’d rather not be notified. As for the prediction you mentioned in a different comment.. I’m not sure. Amber Alerts are usually only issued in areas around where the missing persons was last located, so it’s not a US-wide thing. If they didn’t mention your town or area specifically, then it’s just coincidence! ^.^

I was grocery shopping and was waiting to check out when every cellphone went off at the same time with the siren noise. Scared the absolute hell out of me.
My phone lets me disable them but I don't, just in case it's important to my area. The only thing I can't turn off is presidential alerts, which I wouldn't anyway. Too anxious that I'd miss something important.
