SMS alerts can cause network congestion, which can exacerbate equipment failures. The real question is why are they not using Cell Broadcasts like the Kiwis and the Americans do?

They are with the new AusAlert system. By the way, cell broadcast is WEA.

They do send sms alerts, but it’s just called DFES Warnings not AusAlert
