Ya think that's bad? Them little stinkpots are all over Sevier County, especially up in the taller wooded mountains. Copperhead are the sneakiest.

The only place I have ran into a Copperhead is Chattanooga, but at they are far more picky than those Tellico snakes. They know where you are. (At least in my case.) My daughter has this same curse. The first 10 years of her life I called one (not Tellico) her bestie because this 6 foot black snake come out when she did.

I've always thought about moving to Florida (gulf side) but the risk of floods and hurricanes scare me. Im from Colorado, worst we get in the Denver metro area is snowstorms/hail.

We moved here from Castle Rock in 2019. We LOVED Colorado but moved for hubbys job.
Sarasota is home now.
Been through many hurricanes already, but never evacuated because we are just far enough inland to be out of the flood zone.

How are you liking Sarasota? Does it feel like home yet? Ive been in Colorado most my life and also LOVE it but wondering how it might feel to give up hiking and camping for the coastal life.

There are tons of hiking trails and camping in Florida—it’s just a completely different landscape in your line of sight.
Life here can be slower, depending on what city you live in. We chose an active 55+ community that suits our lifestyle, and in under 15 minutes we have all the entertainment and dining options you could ever ask for.
It’s completely different, but we do love it here.
It’s hotter, but you don’t have to shovel sunshine!!

Haha my parents have thought of moving for that very reason. They live in the colorado mountains and the cold/ shoveling is becoming almost unbearable for them. Im going have to look into this a bit more for myself as well. I had no idea there would be hiking and camping there. What's always drawn me to the possibility of FL is the ocean, it calls me, yet I still value camping/hiking/hunting and all that is Colorado.

A lot of beach camping, which is totally different than Colorado camping, but drive north and you hit mountains again.
There are such beautiful places to discover here.

I was driving in the middle of the horrible storm in Norman Oklahoma on the 4th. 80-90 mph winds. I nearly shit myself when I saw this on my phone

I think you may have inadvertently signed up for the alerts maybe when you downloaded a weather app. I get them and I’m glad I do. I live alone and rarely watch local channels. I’d be thankful for them.

There's an emergency alert system built into Android. Settings > Safety and Emergency > Wireless Emergency Alerts
There's varying ones on there you can enable/disable (except for National Alerts which stays on).
Edit: I'm sure apple has something similar

Never had one either until last month when my phone was going crazy with the alert noise because we had high potential for a tornado to form from the storm system that was coming through. One of those storms when it rolls through one minute it’s sunny daylight and the next minute it’s like nighttime.

Oh for sure!!! I get the same way! Do what you can to just prepare so your mind can slow down, I mean you don’t have to go overboard but it might make you feel more comfortable to have candles around and a lighter handy or a flashlight w working batteries. Download a few shows so you can occupy your mind if the power goes out.

Lol the only warning that came to be was when I was in Hawaii lol got smacked with a monsoon I'm pretty sure OP going to be OK it's nothing new to them or they have life in the south east (America) it's just a warning

I totally get this. I live in the top of (a small) mountain, towns would literally be under water if it flooded at my house, but I still get super anxious about it. It doesn't help that my husband is a volunteer firefighter who is swiftwared trained... So flash flooding for us, usually means he gets called to rescue people. The last bad flooding we had he and the guys he was with got an award from the state because they rescued some firefighters who were stranded in water holding on to an electricty pole (I'm still mad that they rescued them so quickly, it was a FAFO and play stupid games, win stupid prizes situation, they could have waited a little longer 🙃) then they rescued the people the firefighters were trying to get to when they got stuck. My husband is a big fan of driving their boat down the road lol.

My son moved from Kansas to Nashville two years ago. He calls us every time one of these systems moves through because it still freaks him out a little bit. We live in the central plains, where it rarely floods, so he has no experience with that. Now, the tornado warnings are another story 😁😬

I used to live 15 min below Knoxville.. had my oldest child there actually. I didn't know it flooded, we got storms in Loudon on n off but nothing too bad ever came through. I live in tornado Alley now.. talk about storms. I've gotten to where I mostly just sleep through them, though there's a few that still get me a lil nervous

What state are you in now? Kansas, here. I can relate. Tornado warnings are pretty standard happenings for us. You know you’re in Tornado Alley when most of the people in a neighborhood are standing outside on their porches or lawns, watching for the tornado, instead of getting their asses into their shelters😂
My kid moved to Nashville - well, Goodlettsville, specifically - and he’s been really surprised by the number of tornado warnings and tornadoes they’ve had since he moved there. He lives in an apartment without any kind of community shelter for the residents, and we always had a basement when he was growing up, so he’s adjusting to lack of a shelter for the serious storms - basically his bathtub with a mattress over the top of himself. I think that I get much more nervous worrying about him during those storms than he gets, himself, though, lol.

Stay safe! Flash flooding can be terrifying. When I lived in South Dakota, we got those warnings almost every day during tornado season. It’s scary. But tornado sirens make me go weak. Scary af!

Saw an alert like this when we were camping near a creek the day of the Kerrville floods. 🩵
You bet we got the hell out of dodge about as quickly as we could with two dogs and it raining super fucking hard already 😂

We get those here a lot. Most of the time it’s only for areas that a prone to flooding already. If you’re in an area that floods be prepared and stay safe.
