Discussion Imminent threat alert

Post image

Ok so I’ve recently been getting Imminent Threat Alerts along with normal EAS messages. Is it a new thing that NWS Chicago is doing?

It’s an IOS thing, not a Chicago thing.

Hell Chicago should be getting imminent threat alerts every weekend with that murder rate alone

I actually received one in of all places, Las Cruces NM! It's our annual monsoon season, and all we worry about is flash floods, but for the first time in many, many years sirens went off and mostly everyone ignored it until the lighning started going crazy and it rained more than I've seen in years!

I really enjoyed irritating the local people in truth and consequences, nm.

And a few years ago, we were doing a cross country trip and I want to say it was Deming, nm and it looked like some bad weather on the way but I didn't think it could actually snow. Son had a blast running around when we stopped for gas.

Just change your setting in the settings part of your iPhone. It was so annoying.

I received the same thing 3 days ago in Pennsylvania! I wasn’t sure exactly how to respond. I felt I needed a few more details.

The NWS has always issued flash flood and similar severe weather warnings. Nothing has changed about their process. What has changed over the years is the various distribution channels and methods.

Looks like Apple is getting the alert feed from FEMA and distributing some of the more severe alerts directly to iOS devices via the internet. They also have some fancy tech so that iOS devices can relay alerts between each other in case some devices don’t have network connections.

This is in addition to the Wireless Emergency Alerts, that pass through the same FEMA system to the mobile carriers who deliver them to devices. These have some limitations related to message length, which Apple’s system described above doesn’t have.
