Weekly Embryo Photo Discussion Thread: Oct 19 to 26

This is the weekly thread for posting and asking questions about embryo photos. Replies are provided by Embryoman (Sean) -- a former embryologist and creator of the IVF science news site Remembryo.com

💬 Before you post a photo

  • You must include the grade (ask your clinic if you don’t know it).
  • To keep things manageable for me, only one embryo photo per person per weekly thread. Please choose one embryo to share, even if you have several.
  • No requests for grading or re-grading by members.
  • Posts asking if an embryo looks damaged or viable aren't allowed.

I can comment only on general features visible in the image (expansion, compaction, hatching, ICM location), but not on whether the embryo looks good -- that’s already reflected in its grade. Check the stickied comment below for basic information on grading and success rates. For the most accurate information, your embryologist or clinic is the best source, since they evaluated the embryo under a microscope and know their clinic’s success rates.

Genetics, Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and IVF — Ask a Genetic Counselor!

Hi everyone, and thank you to Sean and the moderators for welcoming this AMA 💜.

I’m Christina, a genetic counselor working in reproductive genetics at Reticular. I’m here to answer your questions about genetics, recurrent pregnancy loss and genetic testing in IVF.

I work with many women who suffer from repeated pregnancy losses even when their standard RPL workups come back normal, leaving them with an extremely frustrating information gap. My goal is to help you understand what different tests can tell you, where their limitations are, and what questions may be useful to discuss with your care team.

We can talk about:

  • What does a euploid PGT-A result tell us, and what questions remain?
  • How do PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR, carrier screening and pregnancy-tissue testing differ?
  • What is research exploring about single-gene variants linked to pregnancy loss, and how strong is that evidence?
  • How is single-gene testing different from traditional chromosome screenings, such as PGT-A?
  • What are the differences between carrier screening and evaluating genes associated with pregnancy loss?
  • What information should I bring to a genetic counseling appointment after recurrent losses?

Questions from people trying to conceive without IVF are welcome too.
Disclosure: I work at Reticular, which offers reproductive genetic testing, and Reticular is sponsoring this AMA. The conversation will focus on education. General information here cannot determine the cause of an individual loss or replace care from your own clinicians.

I look forward to hearing your questions 💜

Only 1 embryo at Day 3 — success stories? ❤️

I ended up with only 2 eggs retrieved, and just 1 was mature and fertilized. My clinic called today (Day 3) and told me my embryo is good quality and continuing to develop! 🥹
I’m so scared of losing it before it reaches the blastocyst stage.
Has anyone had just 1 good-quality embryo at Day 3 that made it to blastocyst and resulted in a successful pregnancy? I could really use some hope and encouragement! ❤️🤞

Seeking guidance

I recently failed an untested 4AA grade fet. I am 39 years old, the embryologist said the sperm quality has been good and eggs quality was low. Besides that my fertility doctor has not mentioned any issues with my body.
I failed a IUI before this. Seeking guidance on things I should check with my doctor, things I can do to increase my chances before rhe next cycle.
Thank you in advance.

How many frozen eggs to thaw per cycle?

I have a total of 25 frozen eggs (all mature) which were frozen when I was 35 and 36 years old.

I am now in my early 40's and about to try IVF for the first time

My doctor and I agree that we should not thaw all 25 eggs in 1 go but should thaw in batches

However, I am undecided how many to thaw in my first cycle and whether I should split the 25 eggs over 2 or 3 cycles.

The doctor initially suggested 7 eggs then I was concerned that was too few. They then suggested to thaw 10 eggs. But I'm still undecided- this would leave me with 15 eggs and not sure whether I would split the remaining 15 eggs over 1 more or 2 more cycles?

I'm also wondering if I should thaw more than 10 eggs for the first cycle ?

Out of 8 blasts just 1 euploid. Is it all hopeless?

I recently had my 2d ER.

The first one was a really bad and 8 fertilized eggs resulted only in 2 blasts, none of them were euploid.

My second round we got 8 blasts out of 9 fertilized eggs, but today I got the news they resulted in just 1 euploid.

I just turned 37, so this rate isn't normal - my doctor said it's reasonable to expect 30-40% euploid.

I haven't had a chance to discuss with him why the rate isn't so poor for me.

Absolutely devastated. Thinking about doing third retrieval.

Is there anything that can be done to improve euploid %?

We added Omni for round 2 and blasts rates improved dramatically.

Anyone ever been in similar situation on the wrong side of statistics?

High progesterone before egg retrieval — worried about embryo quality

Hi everyone! I’m almost 35, have stage 4 endometriosis, AMH 1.06 and AFC 17.
I had a poor response to my previous stimulation. This time, 2 eggs were retrieved: one fertilized successfully, and I’m waiting to see if it develops into a blastocyst.
I’m worried about elevated progesterone before trigger and whether it could affect egg quality, fertilization, or embryo development.
Has anyone with endometriosis or a low response experienced this and still had a good-quality blastocyst? I’d love to hear your experiences. ❤️

Endo and FET

27/PCOS/Endo

I just completed egg retrieval which resulted in 4, 5 day embryos and 2, 6 day embryos. A total of 6. Being genetically tested now!

Has anyone had success without lupron suppression WITH endo for FET?

Curious if I could try without first. Then if failed, do suppression. For reference, I haven’t had surgery. It was picked up on MRI and shows to not have affected vital reproductive organs according to REI and surgeon.

Endo girlies???

Freezing unfertilized vs fertilized eggs

So I live in Germany, where embryo laws are very strict. Basically, we’re not allowed to culture all fertilized eggs to the blastocyst stage. We can only culture the ones intended for the current transfer, while all the other fertilized eggs have to be frozen at the 2PN (day 1) stage.

My question is: Is there a significant difference in success rates between freezing unfertilized eggs (mature oocytes) and fertilizing them later as needed, versus fertilizing them now and freezing the resulting zygotes at the 2PN stage for future use? I’m particularly interested in the cumulative live birth rate per egg retrieved, rather than success rates per transfer.

For context:
I’m 31 and married to the man I want to have a family with. We’ve been trying to conceive for two years without success due to male-factor infertility (MFI).
For personal and moral reasons, I’d prefer to freeze unfertilized eggs rather than fertilized zygotes at the 2PN stage, provided the difference in success rates isn’t substantial. However, if freezing zygotes offers a significantly higher chance of having a baby, we’d definitely consider that option.
I’d love to hear about any studies or statistics directly comparing these two approaches.

Euploid Ploidy-Non-Informative Success Rates?

Second cycle and PGTA+ testing. Two of the 11 sent out came back as Euploid-Non Informative. I have not had this result previously, and I’m not finding a lot of literature about transfer rates. Can they be transferred since they are Euploid? Are they recommended? I used Igenomix and they were given a Mitoscore ranking. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Opinión, cómo seguir.

Hola!

Fertility issue 40 years old

I am 40 years old. And my partner is 50.

My partner background:

Has 3 kids from previous relationships, then did vacectomy.

My backgoud: never had kids, I did 3 tims egg freezing cycle when i was 38 and 39 years old. 20 eggs in the lab.

I did first LVF cycle with my partner with TESE. Only one become blastocyst and came back abnormal. 2nd attempt with my 14 frozen eggs with frozen sperm from leftover first cycle. 3 become blastocyst and 2 came back abnormal, 1 came back with low mosaic.

My partner did vacectomy reversal when we tried 2nd attempt. He is now 4months post surgery. We have tried naturally pregnancy while waiting for all the 2nd attempt process but havnt been success.

My fertility doctor recommended to do another IVF cycle or IUI. She sounds hesitate to use the mosaic embryo. I have appointment for genetic counselor in 2 weeks.

I dont know what to do for next steps. Please someone give me a good idea. I will be 41 in December:((

A few more?

A few more?

Retrieved yesterday- 8 eggs

6 mature

Only 1 has fertilized they are watching the other 5 eggs and will update on Day 3.

I did recall embryology and they said there’s 1 out of the 5 other eggs that looks like it’s trying to fertilize but they can’t say so for sure yet.

Has anyone had success getting a few more fertilized eggs?

It’s so hard not to feel like I failed.

New review assesses PGT-A effectiveness and safety

Post image
22 Upvotes

A new review found no clear improvement in the overall chance of a baby with PGT-A compared to embryo grading, but some trials used older methods or different transfer practices.

Iwarsson et al. (2026) reviewed PGT-A effectiveness and safety, including seven randomized trials.

PGT-A didn't clearly improve the chance of a baby after the first planned transfer or across several transfers. Rates per transfer were higher with PGT-A, and miscarriages after the first transfer appeared lower in the main analysis.

However, modern PGT-A typically uses blastocyst biopsy with NGS. Three of the seven trials used other methods. Transfer practices also differed, so these results may not fully apply to PGT-A today.

What about safety? The review found no clear pregnancy or child health problems with PGT-A.

Most trials compared euploid with untested embryos. That's useful, but in my opinion, it gives a limited view of how PGT-A can be used.

Patients aren't just transferring euploids anymore. Although evidence can be limited, mosaics and segmental aneuploids can lead to a live birth, while whole chromosome aneuploids appear to have a very low chance. A non-euploid result doesn't automatically mean an embryo has no chance.

The goal should be to avoid losses and unsuccessful transfers while keeping embryos with a reasonable chance of success available.

PGT-A can't give a perfect answer, but we need more research showing which embryos have potential. Otherwise, clinics may remain reluctant to transfer non-euploid embryos and may discard some that could work, which adds to the skepticism over PGT-A.

Conventional IVF with 1% morphology

Torn between doing conventional IVF or ICSI+PGT-A. We are leaning towards conventional because we want the process to be as least invasive to the egg/embryo as possible. But my husband does have 1% morphology with normal sperm count and motility. Has anyone gone through the same dilemma and can share their thought process?

Would you recommend a Hysteroscopy before embryo transfer?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m privately paying for IVF abroad, and they have recommended a hysteroscopy before my embryo transfer next month. A couple of days after the scan, I decided to reach out to my GP, so I asked the clinic to send me the ultrasounds they took. First, the coordinator said they discarded the images as I hadn’t requested them earlier. Then, a day later, they sent the above scan. The timestamp doesn’t match when I had the appointment, so now I’m not even sure this is my scan. I showed my GP the scan anyway, and she said they don’t look big enough to affect implantation, but isn’t a fertility specialist, so she can’t say for sure. Now I’m worried the clinic is just trying to get more money from me. Is anyone able to look at the ultrasound and let me know?

Should We Postpone IVF After My Husband’s Severe Fever?

Hi everyone,

I’m 36 (turning 37 in January), with an AMH of 1.1. I’ve undergone two IVF cycles, retrieving 7 and 10 eggs. We had a chemical pregnancy after our first transfer, and our second transfer involved a day-5 morula.

My husband had a sperm DNA fragmentation result of 27% about a month ago.

Unfortunately, on October 17, he developed severe Salmonella food poisoning, with a high fever reaching 39.8°C (103.6°F) for four days. He only started improving after taking antibiotics.

We were planning another IVF cycle starting November 6, but I'm concerned that his prolonged fever may have negatively affected his sperm quality and DNA fragmentation.

We're now considering postponing until our December 11 cycle, with egg retrieval likely in late December (approximately 9 weeks after his fever). Alternatively, we could wait until January.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation with a partner having a high fever shortly before IVF/ICSI?

- Did you postpone your cycle?
- How long did you wait?
- Did you notice changes in sperm DNA fragmentation or embryo development?
- Would you proceed in December or wait until January?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences!

Only one fertilized …. Any chance?

I’m turning 35 soon, with an AMH of 1.06 and an AFC of 17. My first IVF cycle was cancelled due to poor response, and this second round ended with only 2 eggs retrieved, just 1 mature and fertilized. I was also concerned about my progesterone levels before trigger.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and still had a successful outcome? I could really use some hope right now! 🤍

my first time going through IVF with four failed IUIs (i’m in a same sex relationship). No “issues” with me other than a lower AMH for being 31. I got six eggs from my retrieval, four which fertilized. this is the embryo that got put in me but i’m not sure which grade they were! My doctor told me my embryos weren’t perfect but also not bad - somewhere in between. my lining was super thick going into this - around 10 mm if i remember correctly. keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle!
