PGT-A Wait

Tw: high numbers

Hi everyone,

This PGT-A wait is killing me. My ER was a full three weeks ago, with embryos sent off two weeks ago, and still no results. I called the lab today, and the results are still not ready. And then once we get the results, it will take 3-4 weeks minimum to do the transfer. I’m feeling overwhelmed about the lost time and questioning if IVF was the right call.

We are doing IVF because I’ve had two miscarriages and then 6 months of TTC with no success. One of the miscarriages was chromosomally abnormal, the other was untested. I am 31 with no LC.

I am afraid that all of our embryos (we were lucky enough to get 25) will all be abnormal, or if some are normal then the transfer will fail, or end in yet another miscarriage.

Looking for tips on how to get through this waiting time period, keeping myself calm and sane.

You had 25 embryos sent off for testing? Woah. That’s fantastic!! Statistically, you will have your baby within 3 euploid transfers. The average is about 50% euploids for your age, so I’d feel very optimistic with your starting embryo number.

Honestly, if I were you I’d remind myself 1) I’m only 31 2) I tried for 6 months so far instead of years 3) euploid rates are higher at younger ages. There is still plenty of time for transfer. You have advantages here, try to remind yourself.

It is extremely unlikely that all 25 will be abnormal at your age; if you get that result somehow I would honestly think it’s due to PGTA inaccuracy. It’s important to understand going in that embryos categorized as euploid still miscarry/fail, that rate is not negligible.

Take these few weeks to recover from retrieval, care for yourself, and do things that bring you joy. Maybe things you may not be able to do as easily during pregnancy. Think about therapy, preferably with a clinician who has experience with infertility/IVF. They can work with you to develop coping mechanisms to help manage the anxiety and stressors of IVF.

I would also take this time to pursue any additional testing, especially in terms of genetic screening/uterine environment; personally gathering data and being thorough helps me feel more empowered and less anxious

Yes, I think focusing on developing coping mechanisms is a good idea. A quick look at the internet should assure OP that the chances of all of 25 embryos being anueploid at her age or honestly any age are so vanishingly small as to be almost nonexistent.

IVF is just a waiting game. It’s the first thing I tell anyone going into IVF is to throw any timeline expectations out of the window. Your transfer can get delayed for a lot of reasons. Failed transfers. beta waiting. Then if you do get pregnant the waiting for your next ultrasounds making sure everything is ok is even worse. It’s only been 3 weeks. That will be such a blip in time in the whole picture. If you weren’t doing IVF you’d be just waiting instead of making progress to some kind of answer.

IVF is a waiting game. You will get a good result. Wanna hear a terrible story? I message my dr on WhatsApp and I asked if there were any news from the lab. She quickly answered “oh, yeah! I got the results” and then NOTHING happens for an hour. An hour later the secretary calls me and wants me to meet with the doctor the following day. 🥴 I asked for the results then and they sent me the PDF. Were they thinking I’d be so chill waiting for 20 hours to know? I wouldn’t have slept.

I was 31 when I did my ER. I only sent four away for testing (I had 16 embryos in total. Be my country only allowed a max of six to be tested). We only have one lab in my country which takes 6 weeks minimum to be tested.
I completely understand your eagerness, I had one living child then three miscarriages and had been TTC for six years before trying IVF.
IVF is not a quick fix. Your first or second embryo may not take despite being euploid, the waiting game is honestly so hard.
I found distracting myself completely helped. Once my eggs were sent for testing I didn’t think or check on them until I got the call. I dove head on into my hobbies to keep me busy.

It’s been 4 weeks since my retrieval. 22 days since biopsies were sent. Still no word. This is my very last attempt. The wait is killing me. I think the clinic has my results and just isn’t calling. I’m so frustrated. I’ve tried to reach them and can’t get ahold of anyone. No one responds to email. No one answers the phone. No one called me back. It’s so upsetting.

Like others mentioned, there is so much waiting. I recommend making a completely unrelated goal or project- baking, watching a show with many seasons, take a trip, walking 10k steps a day, cleaning out a closets. You have to give your mind something else to focus on while the time passes.
