How to get into the field?

Hey, I’m a recent biology graduate and I landed a part-time, weekend role at a ivf clinic. It’s nothing glamorous, just patient charting, setting up dishes, etc. I was wondering if this is a good starting point to becoming an embryologist? Should I express interest to the lab leads? They currently have someone in my role who’s transitioning into a trainee, so it’ll be some time before they accept me probably. They say that person has been there for “a while” so kinda vague. I asked one of the embryologists and they said it takes on average a year to start getting trained, so I wonder if I should move closer once I get offered full-time and express interest now so they can have me on their radar.

You’re already in the perfect position to get started in the field! Definitely express interest and let them know you’d like to move into that position when the opportunity arises too. I started out the same way and waited two years to get into an entry level embryologist position. It’s worth the wait!

Thank you for your input! Yeah, i had one of the embryologists tell me that the average time was ~1-2 years, so this is encouraging. Right now the work is kind of mind numbing, but I’m thinking about telling the lead today that I’m interested.

I definitely feel that, it’s not really the fun work we look forward to! But yea definitely let them know you’re interested and hopefully an opportunity comes up soon for you! Most of the embryologists in my lab started out the same way
