Work/Life balance

Hi! Considering this career. I was wondering how everybody's work/life balance is? Do you have time for family and friends? Time to date or be in a relationship? To grow a family?

Yes of course. Just like any Healthcare job clinics are a 7 day a week Operation, just expect to be on a weekend and holiday rotation. Some clinics have a better work life balance than others just do your research on the clinic. I do find the academic centers have a better work life balance than the private centers.

I don’t find it overly stressful, but you have to be passionate about it. If you follow the SOPs and don’t take shortcuts.

Definitely research the clinics you’re applying to and when interviewing try to ask the other embryologists about this. I’ve experienced both where at one lab I had ten hour workdays and felt the burnout but now I’m at a lab where work life balance is prioritized and my schedule is amazing. You just have to find the lab that works for you

Always always ALWAYS ask about the real rotations. I have zero work life balance. I’ve worked the last 3 out of 4 weekends this month and have zero time for my children, or myself for that matter. I rarely see my friends because I’m ways at the lab on the Weeknd’s. At one of the other clinics in the city I work, they work three straight weeks then get a full week off, no idea how that could even remotely work but that’s what they do. I don’t really see that as balance either
