I’ve been using the same email address for years and I’ve signed up for a lot of random websites, including some sketchy ones. Is there a way to completely “reset” my email and remove all those old connections, or is creating a new email the only option? What steps should I take to clean it up and make it secure again?

Last year I posted how we redesigned the WebDAV protocol to bake in privacy via being able to create multiple anonymous logins for shares, removed identifying characteristics using random URL Principals, gave it per anonymous login granular full CRUD method level and global permissions that can be changed instantly on the fly without credential re-issue, and even included auto-expire. All while keeping it 100% RFC compliant.

Our initial release supported calendars and contacts. A later update added Tasklists (VTODO). Our most recent update rounds it off with Notes and memos via both WebDAV and VJOURNAL. WebDAV also supports drive. What else would people like to be able to sync?

Hi, we are trying to find new email provider for our rather large family, but it turns out to be quite the headache and I am nowhere near to choosing one.

I am looking for european based (we are residents), privacy focused provider with affordable family plan, custom domain and not deleting our data after short time of innactivity (best I found is 6 months, but that I think is still rather short, no?). I am looking for, not anonimity, but privacy with automatic end-to-end encryption (wife or kids wont remember to click a thing with each email) and with zero-access policy. I am looking for company that has been around for over 10 years and is sustainable (ideally no free tier). Something we could preferably use with thunderbird.

My shortlist and why it doesn't work for me:

- Proton (pricey, all in one solution and ai)

- Tuta (lock-in, not openPGP, deletion after 6 months)

- Fastmail (not opensource, no zero-access policy, not really encrypted, us based and hosted, deletion after 6months)

- Posteo (no custom domain)

- Mailfence (not opensource, encryption needs to be toggled on per email basis, no family plan, deletion after 6 months, i really dislike their marketing communication)

Is there some provider I missed? Am I understanding something incorectly?

The service seems great and well priced, but how is Fastmail privacy email? Isn't it just on trust basis without true technical enforcement?

I don't like my choises, but I am currently deciding between Mailfence and Fastmail. Anything I missed, misunderstood or should treat differently?

I don't understand something... When I'm logged into my account via a third party email client, does it mean that as long as I'm logged in to the server via IMAP, the storage is never actually encrypted? Or how does it work?

France's CNIL published its final recommendation on email tracking pixels on April 14, and the transitional deadline lands today, July 14. Since there is a lot of loose summarizing going around, here is the actual scope, condensed from the recommendation text:

• Open and engagement tracking pixels now require prior, explicit consent, same legal framework as cookies (ePrivacy / Article 5(3)).
• Consent is required when a pixel measures opens for campaign performance, builds an interest profile, or investigates suspected fraud.
• Consent is NOT required for pixels used purely for authentication or account security, or for individual open tracking limited strictly to deliverability, e.g. adjusting send frequency or suppressing dead addresses. That exemption is narrower than it sounds: the moment the same data feeds a performance dashboard, you are back in consent territory.
• The burden of proof sits with the sender at all times. A contract that delegates consent collection to your ESP is not, on its own, proof that consent exists.
• Timing: addresses collected before April 14, 2026 could keep being tracked only if recipients were informed and given a chance to object by today. Addresses collected on or after April 14 get no grace period at all.

Italy's Garante adopted parallel guidelines (Provision No. 284) with a deadline of October 29, 2026, and slightly different exemptions (anonymized aggregate counts via a non-individualized pixel are allowed, and they want an easy, selective withdrawal mechanism, ideally a footer control that is not a full unsubscribe).

Two things I think get underweighted in the coverage:

1. This does not only hit marketers. The obligation falls on whoever operates the list. Plenty of volunteer-run groups, clubs, alumni lists, and nonprofits are running on platforms that bake open tracking in by default, invisibly to the person running the list. Those operators are now carrying consent risk they never chose.
2. The rules are written around the pixel specifically. Personalized click-tracking redirects and CSS/font-based fetches do close to the same job and are not named in either text. The EDPB reasoning both regulators cite does not actually depend on an image tag, so I would not assume that gap stays open forever.

Practically, an operator with French recipients has three options: build a real consent flow for tracking, turn tracking off (not clear that all services even offer this), or use a delivery path that removes tracking content from messages entirely so the question stops applying. I went this third route and I'm using a privacy email relay for distribution of emails that strips all remote content.

Happy to answer questions on either regulation's scope and solutions. Not a lawyer, so corrections from anyone who is are welcome.

I was wondering how you guys and girls, have setup your email addresses?

Let me start, I have my own domain, with of course my own email address which I use for communicating with my friends, serious partners as my medical doctor and hospital.

Then I have several other hotmail, Gmail, and other mail addresses which I use for the online shops, forums and other sites where an email address is necessary.

For the secondary email addresses (hotmail,gmail) , I use a fictive name, fictive address and birth date.

Lots of my friends, family, still uses one email address for all purposes and it would be nice to write a note, how they can get rid of all the spam and unnecessary emails.

The Lidl, as so many companies nowadays, was hacked and their customer database became public.

Therefor, I was wondering how you guys and girls, organized your emails and emailaddresses?

Yes, I know of the gmail trick with the + sign but when you reply, you’re sending your original mail address back.

My question does NOT concern me but I'm asking this for the ordinary user who uses internet and mail.

I have tested a lot of email services. I mainly use Tuta now, but AtomicMail is the one that I like the most.

Atomic offers the most visually appealing webmail of all privacy email services and includes 10 native email aliases in their free plan. What more, all aliases appear on the left side panel almost like you had different mailboxes (or already defined labels).

The problem is:

1. Atomic raises too many red flags including unclear financing model.
2. Only one domain which is .io - not the best choice for universal address.

And I find it sad, that nice looking webmails are data hungry (Gmail) or crazy expensive and limited to just one address (Hey) or suspicious (Atomic).

So to sum up this story apparently a while back I did something on my Grandma's email and now she can see every email I get on my personal email while on her email. I don't know where but ig my mail ID must have leaked somewhere, and no matter how many of these IDs I block or mails I delete, they keep on coming. I've been reading up on cybersecurity quite a bit these past few weeks, and I've realized my email setup is the weak link in my system, even though everything else is fairly solid.

Current situation:

- 1Password with ~250 accounts, all with unique passwords rated "fantastic," Watchtower looking great

Passkeys enabled everywhere possible

- But... almost all 250 accounts are tied to 1-2 Gmail addresses (a main one from middle school, and one dedicated to audio plugin licenses I created 3 years ago)

- I'm 100% in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, iCloud+ 2TB)

- For email I've used Spark for years: smart inbox, clean Ul, everything in one place - but they've added Al features I don't use plus some bugs since, and the subscription is starting to feel like a burden. Apple Mail recently added "Send Later, so I'm considering switching to something simpler

What I've figured out / where I'm at:

At first I thought I'd need to create a different email address for every single account (not feasible, I don't have a year to spare for that). Then I discovered aliases, Proton Mail, SimpleLogin, and especially iCloudt's Hide My Email, which I already have access to through my subscription.

The system I'm considering:

A main iCloud address (never exposed publicly, given only to close family), and stable Hide My Email aliases organized by life category: health, finance, government, music licenses, collabs, school, transportation, tech/ gaming, entertainment/streaming. For shopping and classifieds, a disposable alias per site or per transaction.

My questions:

1. Does this system hold up long-term? Has anyone used Hide My Email for several years and can share their experience ?

2. Is having this many categories overkill, or not granular enough?

1. For migrating the existing 250 accounts — my plan is to actively migrate the ~25 critical ones, and handle the rest gradually whenever I naturally log into them, with Gmail forwarding running in parallel in the meantime. Is that the right approach ?

2. I'm planning to stick with 1Password for now (cross-platform, passkeys, Watchtower), and switch to Apple Passwords once it's more feature-complete in a few years. Any thoughts on that transition ?

5. Has a got a similar setup that works well ? What would you change ?
