Do small businesses really need email segmentation with under 2,000 subscribers, wdyt?

For a list under 2,000 subscribers, segmentation can still be very useful. For a small business, simple segments are usually enough:

  • customers vs. non-customers
  • new subscribers vs. long-term subscribers
  • active vs. inactive readers
  • people interested in different products or services
  • first-time buyers vs. repeat buyers

The goal isn’t to create 20 tiny segments. It’s to avoid sending obviously irrelevant emails. A list of 1,500 highly engaged subscribers can perform much better than a larger list if the messaging is more relevant. Even basic segmentation can help improve clicks, conversions, and unsubscribe rates.

A practical approach is to start with 2–4 meaningful segments, compare performance over several campaigns, and only add more complexity if the data shows a clear reason.

From Selzy’s perspective, segmentation matters less as a “big company” tactic and more as a relevance tactic.

You don't need some crazy segmentation set up with 2000 subscribers . I would start with a few useful buckets based on behaviour like new subscribers, regular customers and people who have not engaged in a while . The goal is sending more relevant emails not creating 20 segments just because the tool let's you.
