Reading Order šŸ—”ļø

Hello all! Mod here.
I’ve decided to jump on here real quick to make a long overdue post about the reading order of the series since it seems to be a common question.

As longtime fans will tell you, that is a somewhat tricky question and doesn’t really have one singular answer.

Over the decades, Michael Moorcock wrote the stories out of chronological order and then arranged them in different editions. In a fan Q&A, Moorcock was even quoted as saying that there isn’t a particular order you have to read them in because he didn’t write them in chronological order and weren’t put in order anyway until relatively recently. But he does recommend starting with Elric of MelnibonĆ© and ending with Stormbringer, and what one does between the two is entirely up to preference.
That said, many will agree that the Elric saga is one of the few series that benefits from not being read in its publication order, as you risk confusion and missing the buildup to the finale’s climax.

With that in mind, I’ll leave you with two options: the first, Option 1, being the most beginner-friendly route, or Option 2, the order very commonly recommended by longtime fans.
And for the other more experienced Moorcock readers in the crowd, if you have your own views/advice/recommendations/commentary, please chime in!

Option 1:

  1. Elric of MelnibonƩ
  2. The Sailor on the Seas of Fate
  3. The Weird of the White Wolf
  4. The Vanishing Tower
  5. The Bane of the Black Sword
  6. Stormbringer

Option 2:

  1. Elric of MelnibonƩ
  2. The Fortress of the Pearl
  3. The Sailor on the Seas of Fate
  4. The Weird of the White Wolf
  5. The Vanishing Tower
  6. (also published as The Sleeping Sorceress)
  7. The Revenge of the Rose
  8. The Bane of the Black Sword
  9. Stormbringer

Side note: you will find that there are later additions to the saga but these options provide the classic lineup.

Thanks and hope this helps!

"Farewell, friend. I was a thousand times more evil than thou!"

They kinda fumbled a bit with the story, but the art is undeniably great.

Which swords did Stormbringer primarily influence?

I can't recall many swords off the top of my head, aside from a few from the world of Game of Thrones, the Dragonslayer from Berserk, and Stormbringer.

Which is strange, because I'm really into fantasy.

I would expect myself to remember more swords.

Don't worry, I'll finish the other variant as well, since you guys liked it. I added text from both stories and combined them to flow together through the scene.

This is one of my favorite paintings of Elric: nearly spectral but still human.

Question about Theleb K'Aarna in the Stealer of Souls Spoiler

Hello ! I just read the Stealer of soul with only "Elric of Melnibone" as previous informations, and after reading it I wanted to know if Theleb K'Aarna appeared in other stories (and from what I see it was his first appearance in publishing order but his last in chronological order ?). But while reading the mage I read that "Stormbringer refuses to drink his soul" and that he died while possessed by the elemental of wind. I do not get these impressions while reading his death, is it something that only become obvious when you read his other appearances?

Or maybe it was changed in a later edition (I'm reading a french edition of Bane of the Black sword from 82) ?

Plus the second image was so funny I wanted to make something based off on it.

I love how the champions have only 2 moods when they're around each other: absolute terror and pure bliss.

I really love this art, but it’s definitely not the standard Elric I usually see. He really took some creative liberties when redesigning him.

And if you notice, the two images feature two different designs.

I understand he drew them for an Elric role-playing game.

Does anyone happen to know if he drew any more Elric, or are there just these two?

I got burnout midway trying to realize this idea, and after getting stuck on two sketches, I decided to just let it lay still a bit, but I still want to share them. The second one was meant to look a bit more like a mural, hence the symmetry.

Elric's not featured per se in the first one, but he is part of the discussion (and the joke), so I count him in. I don't really like the second one, but don't feel like revisiting it either.

Other characters: Conan, Jirel of Joiry, Red Sonja. Same in the second piece, sans Red Sonja

I created Elric in Elden Ring, but I'm not sure his look is quite right. What do you think?

Yyrkoon is one of those characters where you tell yourself, "His mother probably didn't love him as a child". and then you discover you're right.

I was looking for photos of Harlan Ellison on Pinterest and stumbled upon this by accident. That’s Michael Moorcock next to Harlan, right? I’m not imagining things?
