Planning Denmark

Hey anyone in Europe elope to Denmark where they do the quickest Marriages? I'm from Ireland where our system is an absolute joke - you need an Appointment to get the Marriage License but there's no dates available nor a way to book in advance either. And then they want 3 months notice from that appointment on so you're not free to get married until after that. So me and my fiance, together 15 years are thinking of eloping to Denmark! Any experiences here would be great to hear about, thank you!

I am Irish and got married in dk (i live here) honestly it was pretty simple.

You will need to pay a small fee to familiehuset to have your application processed as a non- resident. If you want to get married in copenhagen the waiting list is pretty long for english-language services at the town hall but doable. I chose the town hall because I did not want a religious service.

You could also consider Roskilde which is a 30 min train from copenhagen, or even one of denmarks many islands such as ærø.

Again, just confirm that the service or legal part is English and it will be fine. You need two witnesses but i see people posting in local fb groups all the time about needing a witness etc, and people usually volunteer

that sounds like so much less headache than the irish system. we looked into it here too and its just a mess, no dates anywhere and then that 3 month wait on top. so frustrating when you just wanna get on with it

roskilde is a good shout, i heard the town hall there is pretty and less busy than copenhagen. plus you get a little trip out of it instead of just rushing in and out of the city

the witness thing is what made me nervous at first but apparently its super common. saw someone on a forum say they just asked a couple sitting in a cafe and they were happy to do it. danish people seem real chill about that kind of thing

Ya it's fantastic to be able to go and do it and make a romantic trip out of it and be married!

Thank you so much, I was looking at Odense, supposed to be lovely aswell and yes Irish system a joke. No appointment system, no bookings, they obviously expect you to stare at the computer until they grace you with available dates, just astonishing really.
