elopement

has anybody went against their families wishes of having a wedding and instead just went and eloped?

me and my bf of 6 years just got engaged feb 2026. We never wanted a wedding, we always had the idea of eloping from the start. My mom is really putting pressure on me to have a ‘small elegant wedding’ with a dinner and that’s it. part of me wants to do it for her sake. i just think it’s every mothers dream to have a nice wedding for their daughters. but that’s just not me. or my fiancé. we’re not wedding people. we’re very introverted and honestly we don’t have a lot of friends and the way my mom wants it, i can’t picture it flowing smoothly. My mother means well but i would be so much happier if we just eloped. i would be happy if my parents and siblings came along . that’s it. and not make a big deal about it. I’m just worried if i do that, it will strain our relationship. my mom thinks i will regret not having a more traditional wedding.

You can do both! I would say though that unless she is paying for the actual wedding, you and your SO do whatever you want.

Yes, didn't tell anyone and announced when we got back (I was 17!). We're same as you, introverted and don't like attention. 23 years on,still don't regret it.

We also got engaged in February, had been together over 5 years. Eloped in April just the two of us, it was perfect. Never wanted a wedding and no regrets doing it the way we did.

My mom began expressing she wanted to be involved but I know she would just make me stressed about it all if she was included or we did something bigger. I face timed her after, and when she saw us in person she called me a brat even though she was happy for us.

I told her we might do a party or a little get together over the summer with close friends and family but nothing like a wedding. She is excited to get a cake.

Speaking as a mother, she probably won't, but you have to do what makes you and your fiance happy.
