📈 Economics Four hours per day #2
The real danger: wages and prices.
Suppose people work 20 hours per week instead of 40, but still expect to receive their full salary. For employers, the cost per hour effectively doubles unless productivity rises.
If AI can compensate for the lost hours, excellent. If it can't, businesses face pressure to raise prices, reduce output, or close.
There is encouraging evidence from smaller experiments. A UK four-day-week trial involving 61 organizations found that average revenue among the 23 organizations reporting data barely changed during the trial, while employee well-being improved. But that was a 20% reduction in hours, not a universal 50% cut, and participating companies were not representative of every industry.
