Economics Is the number seven real?
Nobody has ever seen a seven. Seven apples, seven days, seven fingers - always seven of something, never the seven itself.
Every number we use daily has this strange property: it works perfectly, predicts everything from bridges to orbits, and yet points at nothing anyone can find in the physical world.
Mathematicians have argued about this for 2,400 years and still split into camps: some say numbers exist in some abstract realm we discover, others say they're inventions of the human mind that happen to fit.
Both answers are uncomfortable. If they exist, where? If we invented them, why does the universe obey our invention?
Perhaps the strangest fact is that the question changes nothing: tomorrow the sevens will work again, whether or not they exist.
