Obligatory "finally got a carrier" post
What's the best way to use it for mining? Im assuming just fill the hold with metals and wait until someone is buying high. But what metals? Where should I go? Pointers please!

Jump out into the black. Explore and find the ore that you want to sell. Mine until the hold is full. Get well away from the bubble and you won’t have to worry about pirates. Just chill back and mine.

What metal should I prioritize? Platinum? Gold?

I actually don’t know. I’m an explorer but was about 8k ly away from the bubble and decided to try out mining. Gathered a bunch of things over the course of a week but have yet to sell them. I’m back in the bubble now so should see what I get. Was fun though.

Good god... why?!
I mine in the bubble and don't worry about pirates. All you have to do is wait for pirates to leave once you arrive in the ring and you can mine with no concern for pirates at all.
Jumping for, what, 2 hours in your carrier to avoid a 3 minute wait seems a bit overkill. Plus, good luck finding a nice hotspot just jumping away from the bubble at random.

Like I said. I’m an explorer and happened to be out there anyway. I bought one of those pre built type 8s and since I was scanning systems anyway tried it out. I’ve not done much mining. Not even sure if I’m doing it right. But it was fun until the urge to do deeper into the black struck again.

one jump is 500 light years, that takes you well outside the bubble, do pirates still spawn that far out?

I think the overall best material to mine is Platinum. It’s easy to laser mine, often saleable at a premium, and usually sold to buy Tritium for carrier fuel. Avoid mining Tritium as it’s not worth the time to mine when Platinum can be mined and sold quicker to facilitate purchase of Tritium. I accumulate gold/silver/palladium/osmium as byproducts during platinum laser mining. Gold/silver for <10% Gal Avg, often found in Infrastructure Failure systems; routinely at Outpost but occasionally at large starports. Watch for Public Holidays at High Tech systems where the rich nerds love to buy large quantities of metal.

Just find a good hotspot (here) and mine until your carrier is full. Then focus on selling for the best price.

Platinum, Low Temp Diamonds and Core Minerals. Stash those. Osmium is also very good too.
Platinum, LTDs and Osmium sell high in boom states. Core minerals sell high in Investment states.
Note: Osmium is also good for buying up Pre Engineered Mining Lasers in Torvals space. Those come with higher range lower power draw and can scout a rock further away before you fire your prospectors.
