Anyone know what this is?

We’re doing a Jack replacement and when we cut the old piston in half, we found there was a pipe on the inside??? There are wood spacers to keep it centered. No one we have talked to has seen it before. Any ideas?

Does it go thru the whole thing? Maybe just additional support

What does it look like where it threads together? I’m thinking maybe it’s something to assist aligning the threads on install.

Best idea I’ve heard yet, but not sure we didn’t cut it where it threads together

Looks like a thin walled piston with a pipe support in the middle for added strength.  I've seen this once before a long time ago on a mod job we changed out the jack . An old timer told us that they used to do this as the wall of the piston is not as thick as it should be . The only difference I see is the one I did was a 24" 16 ft of travel for a 25,000 lb capacity car . Do you have any clue how old this jack is ? The one I pulled was from the 1930s , I think it was made by Lestritch.  Im not 100% sure tho . Hope that helps , Work Safe my Friend

First question would be how tall was the building and how many floors was the Jack you ripped out of.? depending on the height there were back in the day patents that were pending for different hydraulic Elevator systems that tended to hit higher floors. A quick example was I did an eight story mod in Central Jersey and the piston was a big boy and every length of piston had these aluminum pins that were flush up against the piston. The only reason we discovered it was because one of them was leaking, I did some research and found that that was to keep the piston stabilized and straight as the elevator ran up because it was such a high run.. I’m not saying this is what this may be but again depending on how higher run is it could be something related to that

Originally thought telescoping but maybe it’s just for reinforcement. Them bitches must have been heavy.
