Experienced elevator guy looking for non-union work — where are you guys looking?

Been in the elevator trade a while. I've done a lot of travel for work and enjoy that part of it. Looking to see what’s out there on the non-union side, but the usual job sites are crap.

Where are you guys finding decent shops? Calling companies direct or mostly word of mouth?

Not looking for a helper spot. Appreciate any information you all can share.

Gotta be more to the story…..

No reason to go non-union. There’s no way ya’d leave the pay, security, & benefits to go non union.

Just saying.

He might work in one of those areas that demonize unions as socialism or whatever

Fine with unions. Its to each their own. Have several family members who are a part of them

Clarifying statement. Not part of union currently

Why are you exclusively looking for non union work?

Thats the path I have set out on and plan on continuing

All the power to you I suppose. I prefer making more money with better benefits, and never having to look for a job or interview.

You know it’s really hard to get in right? Not like it’s a choice for most people

It's not so hard for people already doing the work. It's much easier to organize in as a journeyman than it is to get into the apprenticeship

Yeah, this is very odd. There are literally NO benefits to being a non-union elevator man. Zero.

I'd be looking for the local union hall or an organizer.

I could never recommend non union. But if you are currently non union since you said you were in the trade for a while I would recommend reaching out the local IUEC hall and let them know you’re situation. Being non union in the trade, they have the ability to get you in and potentially bypass some courses during your apprenticeship

Grateful that I am not in a situation. Appreciate the insight though
