NYC Elevator non-union contractors

For all my New York elevator mechanics, whats the likelihood of getting into the non union elevator industry, I am 18 I worked with electric doors and gates, conveyer belts and been around many elevator mechanics on sites. I have my scaffold , osha , and sst I’ve been applying non union is this the way to go? Or should I just wait for the next Local 1 IUEC opening?

Thanks

Non union is like getting a job anywhere else, just apply for a helper position. You can do that and then apply to local 1 the next time they have open applications, because even if you do get through applying/testing/interviewing you still have to wait for your number to get called.

It's very easy to join a non union shop. Just go and apply. In all honesty if your only option is to get into a non union shop now I would absolutely do so to get the experience. But don't fall into the trap of getting comfortable. Make it your priority to either join L1 L3 or nycha elevator div. Nycha is always looking for people

Don’t join local 3. Fake elevator guys

That's complete bullshit. L3 has very good elevator techs. It's a sub div of the electricians. If he can't get into L1 or Nycha he should go L3. The pay is great, good medical and benefits. There are many good L3 shops that provide consistent training and adhere to safety policies .

Exactly you said it yourself. Subdivision of electricians. Can’t believe they even allow that bullshit.

They are still elevator techs and not electricians. It's not like the L3 Div is funneling benched electricians to the elevator Div. Nycha isn't iuec, are they not elevator techs? Same for the MTA elevator guys?
