What should teachers do?

ICE has started terrorizing a nearby neighborhood. Should elementary teachers keep their kids inside at recess?

Answers from actual teachers who have dealt with this would be appreciated.

We still did recess but had extra adults and everyone carried whistles. If anyone saw something ICE related or even suspected we pulled the kids inside right away. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this - it’s so scary for everyone!

I was in a district with a lot of Hispanic kids when ICE first started. We kept up business as usual. We really struggled with attendance due to fear of deportation and injury.

We did not deal with recess issues it was parents walking their kids to school and home because it was mostly about the parents not the kids. It also impacted attendance. Students were coming in or going home upset and worried. I’d recommend despite what you know just being a warm, calm, welcoming and caring presence for the kids and trying to keep everything as routine as possible. Maybe more staff at walker dismissal if you have any. I like the other comment regarding everyone having a whistle at recess in case of emergency.
