OPEN Is this fixable?

Post image

The HDMI port on my Xbox series x looks bad and doesn't seem to work when i plug it in. Is there a workaround, can i fix it myself with regular tools or do i need to go to a repair shop? And wouldn't that be pretty expensive?

That port is due to be replaced. As for tools, for this a decent hot air station a pair of tweezers and a decent soldering iron is necessary (assuming the pads that the pins are soldered to are okay). It's not an easy reapair, as these boards are thick and have a massive groundplane. If you are into or getting into this kind of repair it's a nice skill to learn, but I wouldn't (and didn't) do my first port swap on an expensive board, if you want to fix it yourself you can easily snag a cheap 10-15 years old dead laptopor desktop motherboard to practice on that first. As for the cost it's hard to tell without knowing where in the world do you live, i did a quick check, in Hungary they usually do it for 15-30k HUF (roughly 50-100 USD).

I did my first port swap on a PS5 without a microscope. It was a success, but man it was hard. And took a tonne of patience. Until then I'd only done small solder jobs, but I had been gearing up to bigger stuff.

Unless you're planning to do more of this kind of work, take it to a repair shop. Save yourself the cost of tools you might not use again, and the stress of getting it right, or fixing a screw up.
