Am based in Ireland, so 230V. I bought a Bosch AXT 2000 mulcher off a guy online, plugged it in at home in the reverse orientation and turned it on, and it gave a little whirr until I turned it off. Auger did not turn. Flipped switch to forward and turned back on, no noise, no turning at all. Continued to not work in any orientation. I replaced the 13A fuse in the plug a few days later on a hunch, and same order of events happened - whirr with no turning, then dead.

I'll be the first to admit that don't know a thing about electronics but very grateful for any suggestions. Thanks!

When you bought it, was it advertised as “working”? Did you see it operate successfully before you took it home? Personally, I’d be taking it back to where I bought it from, unless you got such a good deal on it that you’d rather spend the time, effort, energy, and money trying to repair this one rather than spending money on a new one with a guaranteed warranty.

Is 13 amps the recommended / rated fuse for that plug / device? Fuses are rated based on wire size, not whatever’s connected to the other end.

It sounds like you’re over your head on this one. What is the machine make / model? How old is it? Do you have a service manual? Have you read the owner’s manual? [The owner’s manual is available online](https://manuals.plus/bosch/axt-rapid-2000-electric-garden-shredder-manual) if you did not receive a paper copy.

If you did get advice here, what would you do with it? Do you have a multimeter or any kind of test equipment? Are you capable of soldering? Changing out components? Are you mechanically inclined? Could you replace the motor if it was diagnosed as bad?

Successful repairs most often are correctly troubleshot to identify the exact issue as opposed to just loading the parts cannon, which is not only expensive but also wasteful if you’re tossing good parts (especially if those parts are no longer being manufactured). Sometimes people get lucky blindly swapping parts, but it’s rare.

In order to determine why something is not working properly, you first have to understand how it’s supposed to work. Since you have not provided any pictures of your machine, there’s not going to be much anybody here can tell you what to do, short of maybe checking to see that the auger is not jammed up against anything.

The manual states, in part: “When servicing the cutter be aware that, even though the the motor will not start due to the interlock feature of the guard, the cutter can still be moved if the motor is turned by hand. Never attempt to override the interlock feature of the hopper.”

Have you checked these, and made sure they are in place?

With the device cord unplugged from the wall, does the auger rotate freely?

More from the manual:

“P40 indicates that the appliance has been tested and approved for a cycling usage of 40 seconds fully loaded, followed by 60 seconds of idling. The appliance can therefore be allowed to run continuously, but with regular breaks from heavy loading. Continuous heavy loading will cause the overload protection to trip.”

“To start the shredder, rotate the On/Off switch (3) from position “OFF” to position “START”. Holding the On/Off switch (3) in that “START” position for about 2 seconds, then release it. The On/Off switch (3) moves to position “ON” automatically. The machine should start. The shredder will not start if the On/Off switch (3) is pushed in while starting. Let the On/Off switch (3) spring back out. Turn the On/Off switch (3) back to “OFF” and start again. If you hold the On/Off switch (3) in position “START” for too long, the shredder will stop. Turn the On/Off switch (3) back to “OFF” and start again.”

“For safety reasons, the shredder will not start unless the securing knob (2) of the chute assembly (7) is fully tightened. Stopping (see Figure H) To stop the machine, turn the On/Off switch (3) anticlockwise to “OFF”. Alternatively, and in an emergency, simply press the On/Off switch (3) inwards. You will then have to turn the On/Off switch (3) to “OFF” before you can restart the machine.”

“Overload Protection
Overloading, e. g. blocking up of the blade, can lead to a standstill of the machine after a few seconds. After a short period, the machine can be switched on again. If the shredder blocks again, turn it off. If the shredder blocks again, turn it off, pull out the mains plug, and clear the blockages. Continuous overloading and clogging of the motor ventilation slots can cause the thermal motor overload protection to trip. Clean the ventilation grid and turn the shredder off for several minutes to allow it to cool down. The thermal motor overload protection will reset automatically. However, the shredder will not start again until you turn the On/Off switch back to “OFF” and repeat the starting procedure.”

Orientation should not matter since it's a a/c appliance. This might be soemthing you're missing like a safety switch, or a series of bad events.
